BCD-TO-SEVEN-SEGMENT DECODERS/DRIVERS

IC 7447 BCD to seven segment decoder accepts four lines of BCD (8421) input data, generates their complements internally and decodes the data with seven AND/OR gates having opencollector outputs to drive indicator segments directly.

Function table:

H high level, L low level, X irrelevant

Note: 1. The banking input ( ) must be open or held at a high logic level when output functions 0 through 15 are desired. The ripple-blanking input ( ) must be open or high if blanking of a decimal zero is not desired. 2. When a low logic level is applied directly to the blanking input ( off regardless of the level of any other input. ), all segment output are

3. When ripple-blanking input ( ) and inputs are at a low level with the lamp test input high, all segment outputs go off and the ripple-blanking output ( ) goes to a low level (response condition) . 4. When the blanking input/ripple blanking output ( to the lamp-test input, all segment outputs are on. is wire AND logic serving as blanking input ( ) is open or held and low is applied ) and/or ripple-blanking output ( ).

Working of the circuit

1. When BCD inputs from 0000 to 1111 are applied at the input terminals, the IC produces equivalent outputs at its output terminals from ag. The 7seg display is common anode type. 2. Suppose BCD input is = 0101. It is equivalent to decimal 5. This input is converted into equivalent 7seg code by the IC and its outputs abcdefg = 0100100. For the input = 1000, all segments of the display will glow to show decimal 8 and outputs abcdefg = 0000000 and so on.

Procedure:
1.Switch on the power supply of the circuit.

2. Connect different BCD inputs from 0000 to 1111 and note down the corresponding output on the display. 3. Tabulate the readings

Note: Display pattern for BCD input counts above 9 are unique symbols to authenticate input
conditions.
