Role and Responsibility of a First- Aider

First Aid is the immediate help or treatment given to an injured or ill person with scientific basis by a qualified First- aider before a doctor or medical help arrives or till the victim is transported to a hospital. ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES OF A FIRST- AIDER: As a First Aider you must: 1. Survey the Situation: Reach the place of accident immediately, calm and composed, and survey the accident scene. Call for medical help and give them a description of the emergency situation. 2. Survey the scene: Make a survey of the victim and look for vital signs. Ensure your safety and then do a primary survey of the scene. 3. In the primary survey look for vital signs: AIRWAY, BREATHING and CIRCULATION. 4. Take help of the First aid equipment if available. 5. Remove the causality from the site of accident. 6. Disperse the crowd. 7. If the victim is conscious reassure the victim and find the cause of accident. 8. Call for the doctor: Inform the First Aid Centre and the hospital emergency as soon as possible. 9. If the victim is unconscious A: to open the airway tilt the head back and lift the chin. B: to check for breathing you must look, listen and feel. If there is no breathing give artificial respiration preferably mouth to mouth. C: To check for circulation you must palpate at one of the carotid arteries, located in the neck on either side of the Adams apple. If circulation is not present give external cardiac massage. 10. Splint the fractures and the wounds should be dressed with a clean bandage. 11. Keep the victim under observation at all times till he reaches the hospital or the medical help arrives at the site of accident. 12. Arrange for safe transport of the victim to the hospital.
