Darrik Johnson Title: Dubuque Multicultural Family Center Date: February 24, 2011- April 26, 2011 Artifact

Description: My artifact for this experience includes a picture of the final presentation that I gave along with other volunteers from the Multicultural Family Center at the PACCE Poster Day. The poster and presentation summed up the time I spent volunteering at the Dubuque Multicultural Family Center. While working at the center, I tutored and led group projects and games for groups of children consisting of different ethnicities and backgrounds. ALIGNMENT Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment I believe this experience best aligns with standard three of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards. This standard states that the teacher must understand how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities. During my time volunteering at the Multicultural Family Center, I was able to interact with children of different races, cultures, and backgrounds. I learned and practiced different teaching strategies and also how to relate to a group of students and individuals with varying backgrounds. UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skills, and Disposition Statement Alignment I believe this experience best aligns with KSD2.a. of the UW-P School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition statements. This standard states that the candidate demonstrates genuine care and respect for students while the students exhibit respect for the teacher. The students also display genuine care and respect for one another as individuals and as students, and are aware of cultural, social, intellectual, and physical variations among their peers. I aligned it to this standard because I came to know and respect many different students on a personal level. I spent a good amount of time working with many people of different cultures and learning to respect people as individuals. Secondary Alignments KSD1.b.: Demonstrating Knowledge of Students KSD2.a.: Creates an Environment of Respect and Rapport KSD2.b.: Establishing a Culture for Learning KSD2.c.: Managing Classroom Procedures KSD2.d.: Managing Student Behavior KSD3.b.: Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques KSD3.c.: Engaging Students in Learning KSD3.d.: Providing Feedback to Students KSD3.e.: Demonstrates Flexibility and Responsiveness REFLECTION What I learned about teaching/learning: I learned that it is important to have knowledge of other cultures and give people of all cultures respect. It is important to know your students so you can do everything possible to accommodate

Darrik Johnson their growth and learning as a student and person. People come from many different situations, good and bad, and it is a teachers job to facilitate growth and learning regardless of background or race. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator: I learned that I have learning of my own to do. A student may have just as much to teach an instructor as the instructor has for the student. It is important to avoid making judgments of people before you know where they come from and why they are who they are.
