Plate girders and trusses
Elements: 1. Web plate 2. Flange plates 3. Stiffness a) bearing stiffness 4. Splices a) web & flange b) transverse and longitudinal stiffness
Web thickness: 1. When transverse stiffness are not provided Web connected to flanges along Both longitudinal edges
2. When only transverse stiffness are provided For 3d For 0.74d For c <0.74d
3. When transverse stiffness and longitudinally stiffness are provided at area at one level only, at 0.2d from the compression flange. 2.4d 0.74d

Stiffener Design: 1. Intermediate transverse web stiffeners: To improve the buckling strength of a slender web due to shear 2. Load carrying stiffener: To prevent local buckling of the web due to concentrated loading. 3. Bearing stiffener: To prevent local crushing of the web due to concentrated loading. 4. Torsion stiffener: To provide torsional restraint to beams and girders at supports. 5. Diagonal stiffener: To provide local reinforcement to a web under shear and bearing. 6. Tension stiffener: to transmit tensile forces applied to a web through a flange.
Minimum stiffness: If If Buckling check: = stiffener force = design resistance of intermediate stiffener V = factored shear from adjacent to stiffener = shear buckling resistance of web panel. Connection of intermediate stiffeners to web:
