Running Record Observation Child One Location of Observation: Educare Daycare Center Childs First Name/ nitials: Emme Childs !ge: " Date of Observation: #une $%& %'$% (ime: ):%"*):)" +riefly describe the setting: (he children are ,laying outside -ith a variety of bloc.s/ Ob0ective descri,tion Emme asks her friend, Laney, to play dolls and pretend that they are sisters. There is a line of blocks stacked across a shelf and Emme tells Laney that this is the bridge and to come over and play. Emme exclaims, Be careful the bridge is falling apart! !The blocks "ere starting to fall from the shelf# $he puts the blocks back together and says, Look it%s ama&ing the bridge is put back together! Emme starts shaking her doll and saying, 'h no, "e must be careful, "e must get across this bridge because our brother is getting married tonight! Laney follo"s Emme%s doll across the bridge. Emme stops and says, Let%s pretend their parents died "hen they "ere young okay( Laney agrees. Emme picks up a boy doll and says, )e need to find our brother ne" clothes, * +ust bought him ne" clothes, but * don%t kno" "here * put them. Emme runs over to a large block laying on the cement and says Look Laney, a house "ith nobody in it! Laney +oins Emme and says, Let%s pretend their parents don%t kno" "here they are Emme says, ,o, their parents died "hen they "ere young, remember( Emme runs back to the bridge and says, Let%s pretend that these people !other dolls# are making fun of the sisters. Emme says, -aha your parents died and you are stinky! $he then knocks all the people off the bridge. Laney goes to the bathroom and .lexis comes up and tries to take a doll and Emme says, ,o Laney is playing "ith me. .lexis tells Emme that they need to share. Emme says, 'kay, but you have to

play "ith this doll, because Laney is using this one. Emme then tells .lexis that the dolls parents died "hen they are young and the girls proceed playing "ith dolls. 1ub0ective descri,tion * think that Emme had a great imagination the "ay that she made a bridge and house out of blocks. * think that some of her play came out of things that she sa" in real life. * think that maybe she had "atched a movie or kno"n someone "hose parents had died, because she seemed really stuck on the theme. * think that at her development she does not really understand the concept of dying completely yet, as she didn%t seem to have a sensitivity about making fun of the sister dolls for their parents dying. * also think that Emme probably has a brother or sister at home and probably kne" someone that had recently been married. * could see that a big interest "ith the girls "as playing pretend "ith dolls. * "as kind of shocked by Emme%s pretend making fun of the dolls and violently thro"ing the dolls off of the bridge. * "as not expecting that turn of events. * must admit it "as a little bit comical, but had * been her teacher * "ould have told her that "as nice. * think that it "as great that Emme "as able to compromise "ith .lexis "ithout calling on the teacher. Emme sho"ed a little bit more maturity than some of the other children in the class. $he seemed to lead the other girls in their play and * could tell that she "as one of the oldest in the class. Ob0ective descri,tion Bentley ran up to Levi and /enson%s "agon and tries to grab one of the balls that Levi "as holding. Levi and /enson told Bentley he could not have the ball because they "ere pushing them in the "agon. Bentley started screaming That%s not fair, you have t"o balls and * "ant the basketball 0iss /ennifer says, Bentley, * told Levi and /enson that they could push the "agon and the balls around the side"alk 1 times, you are going to have to "ait your turn. Bentley says to 0iss /ennifer, ,o, * don%t "ant to, it%s not fair. -e then takes the ball at of Levi%s hands. 0iss /ennifer says, * do not like that attitude, that is not ho" "e treat our friends. $he then looked at Bentley and said, 2ou need to go set on the fence and take a time3out Bentley ran to the fence crossed his arms, and remained silent. .fter Levi and /enson "alked around the fence a couple times, 0iss /ennifer "ent and sat next to Bentley. $he said, )hy did you act like that, do you "ant to tell me "hat is going on( Bentley said, * don%t kno" 0iss /ennifer said, 2ou don%t kno"( )ell * don%t think you "ere being very nice and "e all need to take turns and get a long okay( Bentley says, 'kay. 0iss /ennifer says, )hen you get up, * need you to have a good attitude and be nice like * kno" you can be, okay( Bentley, 2up, "hen is it going to be my turn 0iss /ennifer( 0iss /ennifer says, )hy don%t "e ask Levi and /enson if they "ill s"itch( Bentley asks, -ey Levi, "ill you let me get in the back "ith the balls( Levi says, 2a you can get in "ith /enson and * "ill push The boys rotate and begin pushing the "agon around the cement. 1ub0ective descri,tion thin. that teacher did a -onderful 0ob intervening/ 1he did not lose her tem,er -ith +entley -hen he -as not being obedient/ 1he told him that she did not li.e his behavior and that is not ho- they treat their friends/ do not feel that she degraded +entley in any-ay/ thin. that is -as great that she told him she .ne- he could be nice and too. a ,ositive tone/ 1he did not ma.e +entley sit for very long on the fence/ !t first& +entley a,,eared mad -hen he had to ta.e a time*out/ 4hen 5iss #ennifer came to sit by him he uncrossed his arms& made eye contact& and a,,eared to be listening/ thin. that is good that she sat ne6t to him and tal.ed to him at his level/ 4hen the teacher as.ed him 7uestions it a,,eared that he -as really thin.ing about -hat she said& even though he res,onded -ith short ans-ers/ n the end& +entley -as able 0oin the other boys and his attitude seemed to change/ thin. that all though +entley seemed to be a little stubborn& he -ill be able to learn to -or. -ell -ith others -ith the right guidance/

Emily comes over and says, That is a diamond. 4o you remember ho" many sides a diamond has( $ophia counts to 5 and Levi chimes in. $ophia and Levi start repeating counting and begin laughing hysterically until $ophia "as called to "ash her hands. 1ub0ective descri,tion could tell that 1o,hia -as getting antsy to -ash her hands/ thin. that it -as great that she -as doing something educational -hile she -aited/ could see that she -as eager and -illing to learn by the -ay she initiated a conversation about sha,es/ 1he s,o.e clearly and could see that her language develo,ment and understanding -as advanced/ 4hen 1o,hia gro-led at Levi for saying the -rong ans-er thin. that she -as frustrated& but did not .no- ho- to e6,lain herself/ thin. that it -as great that teacher ste,,ed in and as.ed ho- many sides a diamond has because it hel,ed the children use their -ords and reasoning s.ills& instead of argue/ n my observation of 1o,hia& sa- her as a leader and initiator/ thought it -as really cute -hen the children -ere counting and laughing/ One of the most s,ecial things about children is their innocence and laughter

!necdotal Record Child (-o Location of Observation: Educare Childcare Center Childs First Name/ nitials: !nara Childs !ge: ) Date of Observation: #une $%& %'$% (ime: ):$"*):%' +riefly describe the setting: (he children are outside ,laying/ 4hat materials or toys is the child using9 (he child is using small ,ush*toy cars/ Ob0ective descri,tion .nara has t"o of the same bikes lined up to form a train. 6ianna comes up to .nara and tries to take one of the bikes. .nara loudly told 6ianna to get a"ay because she "as messing up her train. 6ianna ran a"ay and started crying and .nara screamed for 0s. /ennifer. 0s. /ennifer told the girls that this "as not the right "ay to treat their friends and that if they couldn%t share then they "ould not be allo"ed to play "ith the bikes. .nara said that she "ould allo" 6ianna to sit on the train she had formed "ith the cars and that she "ould push her. 6ianna agreed and .nara began pushing her around the side"alk. 1ub0ective descri,tion (oddlers are still develo,ing their language and communication/ !nara became very emotional over Rianna messing u, her train/ !t first she yelled and made Rianna cry/ 5s/ #ennifer had to ste, in and tal. to them about being nice to their friends/ 1he also gave them an ultimatum to either share -ith each other or to give the cars u, com,letely/ thin. that it -as im,ortant for the teacher to intervene& because it hel,ed the girls to come to a com,romise on sharing/ Children this age need hel, using their -ords to e6,ress their feelings/ !nara seemed to be very stingy -ith her cars at first/ thin. it is great that she -ent through the reasoning ,rocess to come to the conclusion of allo-ing Rianna on the train/ Children learn through ,lay and re,etition& so feel that 5s/ #ennifer -ill have to re,eat this scenario many times -ith !nara& so that she

continue to become better at sharing/
