Abstract
T he in-c ylinder flow, spray dynam ic s, air-spray interac tion, and fuel vapour distribution have been c harac terized in a m otorc yc le five-valve gasoline engine in term s of their effec t on perform anc e and em issions. A five-valve single-c ylinder optic al engine was em ployed whic h operated at speeds up to 3000 r/m in in the c lose spac ing c onfiguration, with an early induc tion injec tion strategy using a c entrally m ounted swirl pressure atom izer. Partic le im age veloc im etry, spray im aging in a spray c ham ber and in the engine, and planar laser-induc ed fluoresc enc e revealed the im portanc e of a strong and ordered in-c ylinder flow for the effic ient distribution of the liquid fuel throughout the c ylinder volum e and its c om plete evaporation prior to c om bustion, espec ially in the relatively low speed regim e investigated. Furtherm ore, in the absenc e of a large-sc ale vortex struc ture during c om pression, inc om plete m ixing m ay still oc c ur, resulting in m ixture inhom ogeneities and flow instability. Consequently, in c ontrast to port fuel injec ted engines, where good m ixing c ould be ac hieved at high revolution rates, even with an unstruc tured flow, in direc t injec tion engines an ordered flow struc ture is a prerequisite for effic ient c om bustion and low exhaust em issions.
