BAYVIEW SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING OCTOBER 24, 2013 SCHOOL LIBRARY

PRESENT Maria Clavel, Chair Karyn Cornfield, Vice Chair Marie-Eve Breton, Lunch Coordinator Jane Turner, Treasurer Mary Khazal, Secretary Stephine Hennessy, Volunteer Coordinator ABSENT Darryl Hill, Webmaster Dawn Harrison, Member at Large See list attached for further parents in attendance Anne Laperriere, Principal Carole Gagnier, Teacher Anne called to meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Welcomed Andrea Stellmach, Public Health Nurse. Andrea spoke about Active Transporation and how we can get our children to walk, bike more to school and spend less time on the bus. Children are bused more than ever before and so they are trying to get more active exercise in schools.

Walking clubs, Kiss n Ride, some of the clubs they have to get more walking done. Mary will look into this.

Bike Rodeo is organized by City Wide Sports and they come to the school and do helmet fittings and safety on bike, turning signals, etc. Jane will look into this. Places of organizations to help 1. Green communities Ottawa 2. City Wide Sports 3. Ottawa Safety council 4. Ottawa Police Services 5. City of Ottawa By-laws Andrea then spoke about nutritious snacks and lunches (hand outs were given out) 2. Minutes of last meeting were approved. 3. It was asked if links from our website to others like Education Act and Ontario Ministry of Education and the Education Act 4. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN SMART S = Specific M = Measurable A = Attainable R= T = Timebond Focus on literacy. Teachers working on Metacognition which means getting chidren assessed to make sure their reading level is up to what it should be at their grade level. Making sure children are using reading strategies taught in classes. Be able to comprehend what they are reading.

Teachers are working on Special needs students, ESL vocabulary, children not reaching expectations. Students that are on level 1 or 2 on EQAO testing need help to meeting the curriculum expectations. PD day the teachers demonstated the metacognition strategies.

5 .SCHOOL OPERATING BUDGET (Anne) - Goes by number of students in the school so this year Anne receives $23, 696 plus $5, 039 funding for school supplies so total of $28, 735. - It was asked that we send a new list of school supplies with report cards. The list that Anne has from Board and not the list we usually get (longer list). - The budget for last year was $31, 151. The balance remaining from last year was $3,000. What was covered with the money in Annes budget last year was : - Photocopying $10,500 - Supplies $11,000 - Laminating - $270 - Telephone $66 - Computers - Postage (stamps) $400 - PD meeting fees $35.00 and for Anne $60.00 - Renovations shelves for grade 4s $86 - Books $4404.66 - Cafeteria events with staff and speakers - Last year the expenses was $27, 812.22

This year 5 guided reader tables were purchased $1500; 5 literacy carts $1300 so far. 82% of Boards budget is salaries. This year was needed to be purchased in way of supplies were duo tangs; guided reading tables, and literacy carts. OT Occassional Teachers Budget if this goes over budget the funds come out of the Operating Budget. Apples are purchased each month by money that is given to us by Board because Anne applied for this. School Generated funds are also in the budget and this comes from the $20 voluntary fee that was asked for in September. We got $3570 from parents this year. 56 percent of our school population participated in this. This money goes back to the students in way of agendas, buses for trips as the bus that brought the Grade 4s to do cross country at Mooneys Bay was $188.87 and Agendas cost $733. Also what was done with School Generated Funds is (last year) - Puppet show - Workshop author - Fee for star gymnastic - Improve with improve (drama/bullying) - Author visits to school ( 2 last year) - Presentation of Medieval times - Nepean Museum

6. COUNCIL BUDGET (Jane Turner) - 3 major fundraisers Holly Fair, Pizza and BBQ - We dont have a budget for Silent Auction because dont know if it will happen this year at holly Fair. Jane and Marie-Eve decided they would contact some places. - Jane went over the budget and we added $6000 for playstructure. $2000 left for library from last year, $2700 to $2900 Scientists in Science will be done this year and money in from last year. $800 was added to budget to purchase a Ladybug which teachers really need for students and $2000 was added to bring in something to the school or extra trip for students. - Budget was motioned to be passed by Stephine Hennessy and seconded by Karyn Cornfield. Budget has been passed. $1000 will be left over in the budget.

7. PLAY STRUCTURE maybe smaller elements in JK/SK yard instead of a playstructure for now so will be done for September. Small committee to work with JK/SK parents/teachers/Anne to see what is needed and what they would like to see there. We can get grants for the play structure and it was assigned $6000 for this in our budget. 8. FUTURE DATES October 31st Halloween assembly November 5 picture retake November 6 JK fire education presentation November 7 WITS swearing in ceremony November 7 progress report November 14 and 15 interviews for progress reports November 12, 13 and 14 scholastic book fair

9. CONSTITUTION please review and it will be discussed at our next parent council meeting 10. Maria spoke about if anyone else would like to nominate themselves for the open positions on the Board and ask around to anyone they think would be interested to being on Parent Council. 11.OCASC MEMBER - Dawn Harrison has had to step down from this position and it is every 3rd Thursday of the month at Fisher Park School. 12.HOLLY FAIR REVIEW Dan Clavel will chair the committee this year. Anyone that would be interested to join the committee the meeting is Monday at 7 p.m in the library. 13. SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR REVIEW It will run from November 12 to 14th and we are in need of volunteers. A letter will go home shortly asking for volunteers. Next meeting November 28th at 6:30 in the library. Babysitting is available.
