As the MBTI Manual states. the indicator 1is designed to implement a theory2 therefore the theory must #e understood to understand the MBTI1! 0undamental to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is the theory of psychological type as originally developed #y $arl &ung!-"iii &ung proposed the e"istence of two dichotomous pairs of cognitive functionsThe 1rational1 (3udging) functions- thin ing and feeling The 1irrational1 (perceiving) functions- sensation and intuition &ung #elieved that for every person each of the functions are e"pressed primarily in either an introverted or e"traverted form! 0rom &ung4s original concepts. Briggs and Myers developed their own theory of psychological type. descri#ed #elow. on which the MBTI is #ased!

Types of MBTI
The '5 types are typically referred to #y an a##reviation of four letters6the initial letters of each of their four type preferences (e"cept in the case of intuition. which uses the a##reviation N to distinguish it from Introversion)! 0or instance ESTJ- e"traversion (+). sensing (7). thin ing (T). 3udgment (&) INFP- introversion (I). intuition (8). feeling (0). perception (*)

Criticism
In 0ortune Maga, ine. May '9. ):';. an article on the test entitled 1<ave we all #een duped #y the Myers-Briggs Test1. had this to say 1The interesting -- and somewhat alarming -- fact a#out the MBTI is that. despite its popularity. it has #een su#3ect to sustained criticism #y professional psychologists for over three decades! /ne pro#lem is that it displays what statisticians call low 1test-retest relia#ility!1 7o if you reta e the test after only a five-wee gap. there4s around a 9:= chance that you will fall into a different personality category compared to the first time you too the test!1
