Armijn pane was a writer and a founder of the magazine Poedjangga Baroe. Armijn pane provided his writing skills in the Development of Indonesian literature. The writing skills inherited from his father and the skills went to two of eight children including him. Armijn Pane was born in south Tapanuli Sipongi Muara. Armijn Pane has many pen names such as Ammak, Anatam Anom Lengghana and many more to protect his true indentity.

Shackles was described Indonesias first psychological novel. It is a story of a marriage and the husband was to find the meaning to his marriage which is without Communication and caring for each other. They both also have insecurities about one another
