Filipino Writers during the American Period

Lope K. Santos (born Lope Santos y Canseco, September 25, 1879 – May 1,
1963) was a Filipino Tagalog language writer and former senator of the
Philippines. He is best known for his 1906 socialist novel, Banaag at Sikat and to
his contributions for the development of Filipino grammar and Tagalog
orthography.

Emilio Mar Antonio was born on 11 December 1903 in Bambang, Bulacan. He died on 13 May
1967 in Quiapo, Manila. He was a poet and a fictionist. In 1941, he married Andrea Teodoro and
they had six children, one of whom is poet Teo Antonio. He was the administrator and mediator
of the balagtasan on radio sponsored by Compania Elizalde and wrote for their newspaper,
Taliba. He was a member of the editorial board of Liwayway from 1946- 1949 and editor of
Bulaklak from 1950-1965.

Ildefonso Santos was a Filipino educator and poet.He showed his talent in
poetry through a love letter for a secret lover. His cousin, Leonardo Diangson,
read the letter, and it was later published in the newspaper Ang Mithî. After
publishing, the letter was read by Iñigo Ed Regalado. Santos began writing
poetry in earnest and using Ilaw Silangan as his pen name. He finished his
studies as a first professor in Pilipino at the National Teachers College. Before
World War II, he was also a supervisor for the national language.

Iñigo Ed. Regalado was a Filipino poet, journalist, and novelist. He was the son
of Iñigo Corcuera Regalado, the renowned Tagalog printer and journalist. His
mother was Saturnina Reyes. As an editor, Iñigo Ed Regalado was one of the
"powerful voices" in the newspapers and magazines during the first part of the
1900s. It was during his time when the Golden Age of the Tagalog Novel (1905–
1921) started.

Amado Vera Hernandez, commonly known as Amado V. Hernandez
(September 13, 1903 – March 24, 1970), was a Filipino writer and labor leader
who was known for his criticism of social injustices in the Philippines and was
later imprisoned for his involvement in the communist movement. He was the
central figure in a landmark legal case that took 13 years to settle.

Deogracias A. Rosario is born in Tondo, Maynila on 17 October 1894. He started writing on


1915 in Ang Demokrasya. Year 1917 when he started writing in Taliba.

José Corazón de Jesús (November 22, 1896 – May 26, 1932), also
known by his pen name Huseng Batute, was a Filipino poet who used
Tagalog poetry to express the Filipinos' desire for independence during the
American occupation of the Philippines, a period that lasted from 1901 to
1946. He is best known for being the lyricist of the Filipino song Bayan
Ko.

man's misfortune in cockfighting

Patricio Geronimo Mariano (17 March 1877 at Santa Cruz, Manila – 28


January 1935) was a Filipino nationalist, revolutionary, pundit, poet,
playwright, dramatist, short story writer, novelist, journalist, violinist, and
painter. Mariano was a Katipunan member. Mariano was the son of
Petronilo Mariano and Dionisia Geronimo.

Carlos Sampayan Bulosan (November 24, 1913[1] – September 11,
1956) was an English-language Filipino novelist and poet who spent most
of his life in the United States. His best-known work today is the semi-
autobiographical America Is in the Heart, but he first gained fame for his
1943 essay on The Freedom from Want.

Faustino S. Aguilar (February 15, 1882 – July 24, 1955) is a pioneering


Filipino novelist, journalist, revolutionary, union leader, and editor.
Faustino was one of the first novelists in the Philippines to explore and
present social realism through literature.
