What are the potential advantages and disadvantages of C4 pathway over C3 pathway plants.

Group 4

Advantages
One of the key advantages of C4 photosynthesis is its Kranz Anatomy

which accumulates the created bicarbonate deep within the leaf (in the bundle sheath cells). This is the only region where the rest of the photosynthesis process can continue

advantages
Ability to create a high concentration of CO2 at the site of rubisco in the bundle sheath cells. The high CO2 to O2 ratio thus created effectively minimizes photorespiration and enhances sugar production.

advantages
In addition to this, other key benefits of C4 photosynthesis include a higher water use efficiency (high affinity of PEP carboxylase makes Ci lower in C4 than C3 plants), and a higher nitrogen use efficiency

advantages
Another benefit that C4 plants possess is that they do not display light saturation in full sunlight. Thus, altogether, C4 plants possess an advantage over the C3 plants under conditions of drought, high temperature, and nitrogen or carbon dioxide limitation

Disadvantages
C4 plants possess is that their pathways need more ATP and NADPH. This means that they have a lower quantum yield (at lower temperatures).
