Introduction
• About 33% of the world’s natural gas reserves are discovered in offshore fields and
40 % of the natural gas reserves are sour or acid, containing large quantities of
CO2 and H2S and other sulphur compounds
• carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide are often found in natural gas streams.
• Acid gases produced in gasification processes mainly consist of hydrogen sulfide
(H2S), carbonyl sulfide (COS), and carbon dioxide (CO2)
• Carbon dioxide when combined with water will create carbonic acid which is
corrosive.
• H2S is an extremely toxic gas that is very corrosive to equipment and must be
removed.
• Raw natural gases contain variable amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen
sulfide (H2S).
Methods for the removal of acid gas
• Acid gases can be reduced or removed by one or more of the
following methods :

• *Chemical Absorption.

• *Physical Absorption.

• *Physical-chemical Absorption.

• *Cryogenic fractionation.

• * membrane.

• *Direct conversion to sulfur.

Advantages and Disadvantages
for the methods
*Absorption:-
Advantage:-
*Widely used technology for efficient (50-100) % removal of acid gases
( co2 & h2s ).

Disadvantages:-
Not economical as high partial pressure is needed while using physical
solvents .
*Long time requirement for purifying acid gas as low partial pressure is
needed while using chemical solvents.
Adsorption
Advantage:-
• -High purity products can be achieved.

Disadvantages:-
• -Recovery of products is lower .
• -Relatively single pure product .
membrane

Advantage:-
• -Stability at high pressure .
• -High recovery of products .
• -Good weight & space efficiency.
• -Less environmental impact .

Disadvantages:-
• -Recompression of permeate .
• -Moderate purity
Cryogenic

Advantage:-
• -Relatively higher recovery compared to other process .

• - Relatively high purity products .

Disadvantages:-
• -High energy intensive for regeneration
• -Not economical to scale down to very small size .
• -Unease of operation under different feed stream as it consists of
highly integrated, enclosed system .
SELEXOL
• Selexol is the trade name for an acid gas removal solvent that can

separate acid gases

• Selexol solvent is a mixture of dimethyl ethers of polyethylene

glycols,

• nontoxic,with a high boiling point,

• is an excellent solvent for acid gases.

• The selectivity for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is much higher than that

for carbon dioxide (CO2),

• it can be used to selectively remove these different acid gases,

• Selexol is a physical solvent, unlike amine based acid gas removal

solvents that rely on a chemical reaction with the acid gases.
