Guaguanco (de la Habana) for Drumset

Information Guaguanco is a sub-genre of Cuban rumba, combining percussion, voices, and dance. There are two main styles: Havana and Matanzas. In Cuban music, Rumba is a generic term covering a variety of musical rhythms and associated dances. The rumba has its influences in the music brought to Cuba by Africans brought to Cuba as slaves as well as Spanish colonizers. Rhythmically, rumba is based on the five-stroke pattern called clave (rhythm) and the inherent structure it conveys. Instruments we emulate on the following pattern Three congas, claves and chequere. Salidor (low pitched conga) on the floor tom and bass drum, tres dos (medium pitched conga) on the tom tom, quinto (high pitched conga) on the snare drum (cross stick), chequere on the hi hat and claves on a woody block. Source of the pattern Cuban percussionist and educator Jose Eladio Amat Medina Related website: www.sites.google.com/site/afrocubanpercussionworkbook/about-jos-eladio-amat-medina Drum Key

Drum Pattern for Guaguanco de la Habana (Video Lesson)

( = 130)

Notes 1. You can play the claves line on the side of the floor tom. 2. Play the first beat of the second bar on the snare drum with snares for a more "drumistic" sound. 3. While you are playing the pattern sing along loudly the beat, and every line/ voice separately (line of bass drum, woody block, tom tom/ floor tom and hi hat) for achieving greater independence and faster internalization of the pattern. Suggested recordings of Guaguanco Songs and Dances (Conjunto Clave y Guaguanco) Dejala en la puntica (Conjunto Clave y Guaguanco) Rumba rapsodia (El Goyo) Aniversario (Tata Guines)
