Working on the magazine these past few weeks, really taught me a valuable lesson. Have you ever heard of the saying theres no I in team? Some might think that its clich, but really, the lesson behind the words is so valuable. Without the Girlz mag staff, there would be no magazine. Each of their special talents, writing, drawing, photographing, editing, and many others, were used in order to create this magazine. The themes of this issue are basketball, and Chanukah. These two themes also enforce the saying. In basketball, if all five teammates on the court are not working together, then there is no team, and there is no win. In order to accomplish the common goal of winning, all of the team members need to work together. However, as we see on Chanukah, a little can go a long way. The small group of Jews beat the large army of Greeks, and the small jug of oil lasted for eight days. So to, when working in a group to accomplish a common goal, each person must do their part. No one can say, well its a group project, so Ill let them do the work. Instead, a person should be like the little jug of oil, doing their part. In basketball, without any one of the positions, the game cannot go on. In the magazine, without any of the parts, the magazine cannot be published. And in life, without everyone doing their parts, the goal cannot be accomplished. Please take from the themes of this issue, and remember the important lessons that will help you accomplish things more efficiently in life.

The Rolling Basketball

By: Avigayil R It was a regular Sunday afternoon. Because Mom had been getting on me about exercising, I was now walking down Evelyn Drive. I heard a noise behind me. I looked behind me, but I saw no one. In fact, the street was completely deserted. Even the houses looked grey and empty. A bit freaked out, I continued walking. I heard a noise again and saw a basketball rolling towards me. As I looked closer, I could read words written on it in black ink. RUN. Boy did I run. All the way home, in fact. When I walked in, I saw a basketball rolling on the kitchen floor. Thats weird, I thought. My three older brothers dont usually play basketball. I looked closer and saw words written in the same black ink. I CAN SEE YOU. I opened my eyes: it was all a dream. Relieved, I went downstairs to get ready for school. Mom came down a few minutes later. Hurry up or youll miss your bus, she said, also, when did you start playing basketball? What do you mean? I replied Well I saw one rolling on the floor last night, she said it had some words on it, but I didnt get a good look at them. After she left, I shook my head. No way, it was a dream. While walking to the bus, I heard a noise and saw a basketball rolling towards me. It had words on it: I WILL BE BACK SOON!

Ingredients: 2 cups of peeled and shredded potatoes 1 tablespoon of grated onion 3 beaten eggs 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour 1 teaspoons of salt cup peanut oil for frying

Directions: 1. Put the potatoes in a cheesecloth and wring it, taking out as much moisture as possible. 2. In a medium sized bowl, stir the potatoes, onion, eggs, flour, and salt together. 3. In a large heavy bottomed skillet over a medium high heat, heat the oil until hot. Place large spoonfuls of the potato mixture into the hot oil, (CAREFULLY!) pressing down on them to form to inch thick patties. Tip #3--- the color black is in for nails. If you have lighter skin, your nail polish should be darker colors. However, if you have a darker complexion, your nail polish color would be brighter.

Tip #1--- Now that summer is over, white is out, and black is in. Do not wear a pure white because your outfit will be too bright for the fall. If you crave for a white outfit, there are winter white shirts and skirts.

Tip #2--- Feel confident. When you are walking down the halls, be proud of your outfit. Never feel selfconscious because you are wearing a different outfit. It is okay to experiment once in a while!

Every Thursday, the Ogres basketball team meets in the gym from 4:45 to 7:00. During this time, the 15 girls show each other companionship and encouragement while at the same time showing their commitment to the team as a whole. I wondered what was so special about these practices that each girl comes, week after week, with such enthusiasm. To answer this question, I sat in on this past weeks

practice, and I could easily see the reason. Led by Coach Chani Hyman and assistant coach Sara Wiener, the team wasted none of their precious time as they strengthened both their teamwork and skills. The first 30 to 45 minutes were spent on changing and warm-up. While two girls chosen by Chani direct, the rest form a circle around them and work on their arms and legs. I asked Chani why she doesnt lead the exercises herself. Theyre dressed for it, she laughed. More seriously, she added that it gets [the girls] involved, too, they want to do it more. The rest of the warm-up was spent on laps and other speed-andstamina exercises. Team spirit was easily visible in the players smiles and shouts of encouragement; no one looked like they want to be anywhere else. After warm-up, the team practiced shooting lay-ups and jump shots, as well as catching rebounds, and, if they chose, defense. Passing, movement, and a set of mini

one-on-one games came next. Dont be afraid to shoot, Chani instructs. If you dont shoot, you dont miss, but you dont score. As the practice went on, I continually notice that none of the girls judged each other for missing a shot, and that they applauded whenever anyone gets the ball in. Standing on the sides, Chani and Sara gave tips, and later, they gave each person a few minutes of individual advice After a short snack break, the real fun began. Chani gave a short lesson in positions, and then, the team split in half to utilize all of the skill that they had learned in one fast and furious game. Team member Racheli Lipner backed up what Id been seeing on each girls face with the simple

BASKETBALL IS MY LIFE. I LOVE IT.

statement, basketball is fun. Sarena Weiderker added that she looks forward to this every day. Gila Alter summed up the whole teams incredible commitment when she tells me, Basketball is my life. I love it. *note: anyone who wants to see our amazing team in action can go to their next game: December 8th at RYNJ.

COACHING!

This fun, cute card is created with just a computer, printer, and a little bit of imagination!

1) Go to www.tagxedo.com , and click CREATE.

2) Click LOAD on the side, and then type in some Chanukah words 3) Change the shape of the picture by clicking on SHAPE. Then click ADD IMAGE to add a Chanukah image. You can save one of these pictures, or find your own.

4) Once youve selected a picture, determine how sharp you want the picture to be, and if you want the words as the picture, or as the background, not the picture.

5) Determine the colors of your tagxedo by clicking THEME, and selecting one of the themes. (I chose blues and grays for a more Chanukah theme) Then chose your font by clicking on FONT and selecting one of the fonts from the list. 6) Next, you have to click ORIENTATION to decide how you want your words to look. Click on all of them to see how they look, before deciding on one. (Before you change the orientation, its in ANY, but then I chose to use H/V

7) Press FULL SCREEN; see if you like how it looks, and if you do press the PRINTSCREEN button on the keyboard. (If you dont like how it looks, go back and fix it.)

8) Open up MICROSOFT WORD, go to PAGE LAYOUT and under ORIENTATION, select LANDSCAPE. Next click on SHAPES, select a SQUARE, and draw it on half of the page. Move the square back and forth over the page to make sure that the square is exactly half of the page. 9) Then change the color of the shape, or make the shape a pattern or gradient. (I chose a pattern.) 10) Left click, and press COPY. Your tagxedo screen should come up. Select a position and/or text wrapping, and move your tagxedo onto the patterned/colored/gradient shape. Then crop your tagxedo screen until all that you can see is your tagxedo. 11) Click on your tagxedo, and then click FORMAT. Then press COLORING, and click TRANSPARENT COLORING. Then click on your tagxedo, it should become transparent. Enlarge your tagxedo, letting it fill up most of the square, and tilt it to make it look cool. Whatever you do, dont reverse it or all of your words will come out backwards!

12) Insert a textbox, and drag it to the blank side of the page. Inside the textbox, type a cute company name and quote. (Mine is Smile Cards Inc. made to make your day brighter!)

13) Go to SHAPE OUTLINE in the format tab, and press NO OUTLINE. Then highlight the words in the textbox and center them in the home tab.

14) Add a clip art next to the company name, if you want. (I used a smiley face.) Save your card, print it, and fold it along the line, so that the picture is facing outward. Then open up the card, and write a message inside!

By: Rachelli B Cmon, Hurry up or well be late! called Esti to her best friend Leora. Im coming, Im coming! I just need to find my notebook. OK, got it. Lets go. Esti raced down the hall, her long, straight auburn hair flying out behind her. They made it into class just seconds after the bell rang, making them late. Tali leaned over. You guys just missed it. Morah told us to break up into chavrusahs to review the Chumash from yesterday. There will be a quiz in fifteen minutes. Ill be with you. Leora, you learn with Amalia. Tali took out her Chumash to start reviewing. OK, so Moshe went towards the selah- Whos that new girl over there? Esti interrupted, Ive never seen her before and its kind of late to switch schools in 7th grade. I dont know, replied Tali, but we could go over to her after class to learn her name. Anyway, Rashi says that selah means

Forty minutes and one very long quiz later, Esti, Leora, Tali, and Amalia approached the new girl. She had just told a joke and Chana and Elisheva were laughing. She flipped her long, brown, wavy hair out of her face. When the new girl noticed Esti and her friends approaching, she smiled. Hey, Im Shira. Esti blinked. She was expecting a new-girl-type-ofshyness, but this girl was definitely not shy. Esti smiled. My names Esti and this is Amalia, Tali, and Leora. Hi. Um, Esti? Do you know where the art room is? I have that now, but I cant find it. Elisheva and Chana showed me how to get here, but I have no clue where anything else is. Oh, sure. I can help. Esti smiled. Actually, Amalia and I have that now too. Cmon, Ill show you where to go. Esti led Shira through the halls, with Amalia trailing behind. After third period in the morning, all the classes had recess.
