Computer Integrated Manufacturing

Joo Yeon Lee

What is CIM?
Its not a product you buy... Its a way of thinking or problem solving. CIM is the integration of the total manufacturing enterprise through the use of integrated systems and data communications coupled with new managerial philosophies that improve organizational and personnel efficiency. Its also a Manufacturings approach of using computers to control the entire production system. This integration allows individual processes to exchange information with eachother and initiate actions. Allows manufacturing to be faster and less error-prone.

DEVICES & EQUIPMENT

CNC, Direct Numerical Control
Robotics, computers, software, controllers Network & intergacing

PROS
Increase of productivity Reduction of design, maintenance & production costs

Reduction of in-shop time

Better quality and uniformity Automated manufacturing processes. Supports and coordinates exchange of information Faster & more efficient customer service.

CONS

Unfamiliar technologies used Major change in corporate culture Higher perceived risk

Should you adopt CIM???

All changes in technology involve both financial and technological risks but equally a decision not to change is also risky. Investments must yield a return in excess of the cost of capital invested and a major intangible benefit is not losing competitive edge through failure to exploit new technology. the rate of technology take-up by international competitors requires the quick but carefully planned application of CIM.
