Sarcopenia as Manifestation of Endocrine Changes in Aging Process

ABSTRACT Background: Aging is a physiologic process that will affect all the body systems including musculoskeletal. Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome, marked by decline in muscle mass and quality noted gradually with advancing age. Sarcopenia is closely related to habits and poor lifestyle such as low intensity of physical activity, malnutrition and oxidative stress. Besides hormonal changes in the endocrine system can also lead to sarcopenia. Purpose: To discuss the influence of endocrine changes with sarcopenia. Reviews: Hormonal changes as the aging process include decreased levels of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen, which contributes to the loss of muscle mass, strength and performance in sarcopenia syndrome. Conclusion: There was effect of endocrine changes in aging process with sarcopenia. Key words: Aging, sarcopenia, endocrine system.
