Understanding Argument
!! An argument defends a particular position on a

debatable subject.
!! Argument is writing that takes a position on an

issue and defends it with evidence to persuade someone else of the position.

! Support your position with evidence (facts, examples and references to the opinions of authorities) in different paragraphs

! States your position ! Follows the pattern of Issue + position

! Is the last opportunity to win your case ! Makes it memorable and dramatic to remind your readers of the issue of your position

!! A fact is information that can be verified as objectively true. !!From encyclopedias, newspapers, or other reliable sources !! An example is a specific illustration of a general statement

which should relate clearly to your point and should be typical, not exceptional.

!! An authority is someone who is generally recognized as an

expert on a particular subject. ! The opinion of an authority supporting your view on a subject can be very persuasive.

What makes a good Argument?


Take a strong and definite position on an issue Gives a good evidence to defend and support the position

Consider the opposing view

Has energy from start to finish

E.g. While some people may argue that students wont get a well-rounded education (Possible objections), limiting course requirements will actually benefit most community college students (position).

What makes a good Argument?


!! Argument is almost always organized by order of

importance.
!! save your most persuasive evidence for the end, !! build up force, and !! leave a strong impression.

!! Before writing your concluding sentence, build up your

energy again, then reread your topic sentence and draft paragraph.
