Fuentes English 1101 2 December 2013 Analysis of the Opinions about the Government Shutdown The first article, 47 Fun Things You MUST Do During the Government Shutdown, exigence, or reason, was to provide comic relief to a bad situation, and to make people laugh. It was inspired by the government shutdown, and how certain places are not open and some people from the government are not working right now. The rhetor was a comedian. The audience is older people who need something to laugh at and people who has been affected by the government shutdown in some form. The audience shapes the article by making the writer use more simple words and mention things, like the IRS and the Smithsonian, which everyone would recognize without a lot of description. The message is since the government shutdown most of the government workers are out of work causing national attractions to be closed down during the shutdown. The writer uses simple language, making it easier for the general public to understand, and repeats phrases, like the word COWARD. By repeating the word COWARD the writer implies that he or she thinks the government officials are cowards for not working out a deal to prevent the shutdown. The writer directly makes fun of the government and government officials. It indirectly calls the government officials cowards, implying that the government is inefficient. It was not that funny and was hard to understand, so it was not that good a persuading to a side to me (46 Fun Things You MUST Do During the Government Shutdown). In Henderson's article the exigence is informing people about what is happening on the second day of the government shutdown. The context of the article is the government shutdown,

Campone 2 which the rhetor implies is the fault of the Democratic Party. The rhetor of this article is a reporter, but because this is a blog the rhetor makes it more of an opinion based article than an impartial article. The intended audience of this article is people who read the newspaper, or are interested in the government shutdown from the view of a Republican. The message of the article is that the Democratic Party was the cause of the government shutdown. They did not want to work together to work out a deal. The rhetor uses simple and political language when discussing the government shutdown, and talks about previous events in the governments. This influences the intended audiences because if someone was not into government or was not well informed about the politics, they would not have understood the past references. It directly states that the government shut was the caused by both sides, but it implies that it is mostly contributed to the fault of the Democratic Party. The piece was not effective in persuading people, it was very confusing to read because the writer kept jumping from topic to topic. It looked as if the writer just copy and pasted things into an article from other people (Henderson). Henderson was more for the Republican side and Pierce was more for the side of the Democratic Party. His exigence was to inform the people that the Republicans and corporations are the ones preventing the government from functioning. He talks about the disorganization of labor union, implying that it was the root cause of the shutdown. The rhetor is an educated male, who works as a contributor, not necessary a reporter. This means that we know that this article will be more of options than actual facts. His audience is an educated male that is why he used more complex language and political language, which some people would not know what it means. At times he can be very sarcastic but the language is very complex for general public. The message is Republicans and corporations are turning the government into something that will benefit them and not for the people. It directly states that that the cause of the shutdown was

Campone 3 the cause of the republicans and the corporations. It indirectly states that the republicans and corporations are working together to take over the government. This was also not effective in persuading me. It was very confusing and sounded like it was coming from a crazy guy. None of these articles influenced my opinion either way. One reason is that all of them were hard to understand, mostly because I have not been into the news and really do not care about the government shutdown. For all of these articles, one could argue that the main audience is someone who is affected by the shutdown. Since I am not someone who is directly influenced by the shutdown it hard to become interested the articles. I cannot say which one is better at pursuing me because I am not their intended audience. All of them can improve their language to be able to get the younger generation to understand and interested in the government shutdown.
