Thanksgiving Math

Teacher-based Technology Activity: Daily topic: Word Problems about the First Thanksgiving Objective: Second grade students will be able to answer word problems about the first Thanksgiving using addition and subtraction. Materials: Computer, SmartBoard, Internet, pencils, word problem worksheets, QR scanner on iPad Procedures: Teacher will access the website http://www.wolframalpha.com/ and read word problems aloud to the students. The students will volunteer to answer problems, after which the teacher will type the figures into the website and display the answer to the problem. The students will then view how and why the problem had a certain answer and observe the numbers on the number line.

Student-based Technology Activity: Procedures: Students will answer the following word problems. Use the QR scanner on the iPad to answer #5. 1. If the Mayflower carried 8 men, 7 women, and 5 children, how many pilgrims in all did the ship carry? 2. The Pilgrims sat down to the very first Thanksgiving dinner. There were 11 Pilgrims and 6 Native Americans at
the table. How many people were at the table altogether?

3. There were 19 peas in the bowl. William ate 5 peas, Susan ate 4 peas, and Mary ate 6 peas. How many peas were left in the bowl? 4. If the pilgrims planned on having 10 turkeys for thanksgiving, but Sokahtoa ate 2 of the turkeys before thanksgiving, and Hiawatha ate 3 more of the turkeys, how many turkeys would they have left for Thanksgiving dinner? 5. If there were 17 Native American invited to the first Thanksgiving, but 10 of them were sick and unable to go, how many Native Americans were there at the first Thanksgiving? 6. Scan these QR codes to reveal a picture of turkeys. Add together the total number of turkeys from all of the photos.
