The

Larynx

LARYNX
Also known as voice box.
A short passageway that connects the laryngopharynx with the trachea

It lies in the midline of the neck anterior to the esophagus and the fourth through sixth cervical vertibrae (C4-C6)

The wall of the larynx is composed of nine cartilage

Thyroid cartilage Epiglottis Cricoid cartilage Arytenoid Cuneiform cartilages Corniculate cartilages

Occurs singly In Pairs

Thyroid cartilage
Consist of two plates hyaline cartilage that form the anterior wall of the larynx and give it a triangular shape. Thyrohyoid membrane- connects the thyroid cartilage to the hyoid bone

Epiglottis
Glottis-

Is a large cartilage that is covered with epithelium inferior portion that is attached to the anterior rim of the thyroid cartilage and hyoid bone.

consist of a pair of folds of mucous membrane, vocal folds(true folds) in the larynx. The space between them are called rima glottidis

Cricoid cartilage -is a ring of hyaline cartilage that forms the interior wall
of the larynx

The Trachea

Trachea -also known as windpipe


-a tubular passageway for air for about 12cm (5 in.) long and 2.5cm (1in.) in diameter. -located anterior to the esophagus and extends from the larynx to the superior border of the fifth thoracic vertebra (T5), where it divides into right and left
