October 3, 2013 Dear SBS, In the next few paragraphs, I would like to share with you my reflections on my learning

in your ENC 1101 class. I will cover what I learned, how I learned it, why that learning is significant, and how I will use what I learned so far in your class in future courses or in my future career. Throughout your ENC 1101 class we learned how to become better Palmetto writers. To help advance our writing, we learned about rhetorical thinking. Thinking rhetorically is using language and other symbols to influence the attitudes, beliefs, and actions of others. When rhetorically thinking, writers should consider thinking about the purpose of the writing the audience that will read the writing, and the genre or kind of writing it will be. We also learned about exploratory papers. Exploratory papers narrate the writers thinking process while doing research. This paper allows you to examine your questions complexity, explore alternatives, and get a solution/answer. Plagiarism is unethical use of sources, and is take extremely serious. To avoid plagiarism, simply cite all sources. You can cite by putting quotations around the statement youre using from the source. You can also cite by using quotation marks with an attributive tag, paraphrasing with parenthetical citation, or paraphrasing with attributive tags. We have learned how to effectively take notes and study using SQ3R. S stands for survey, Q is for question, and the three Rs represents read, recite, and review. We focused on comma splices, run-ons, fragments, and apostrophes. Comma splice is when a comma should be replaced with a period or semicolon. Run-ons are sentences with no punctuation marks when they need them. Fragments are incomplete sentences, and finally we learned the correct way to use apostrophes when using theyre, its, Johns, boys, etc. When we learned about rhetorical thinking, we read the first chapter of the A and B book. We then discussed it in class, answering any question a student asked. When we moved on to exploratory papers, we watched a video about developing a good research question and we talked about what an exploratory paper looks like. We also talked about analyzing a target audience. To test our knowledge on exploratory writing, we were required to write a 750-1000 word research paper. We needed to cite our sources, so we read about citing in the A and B book on pages 348-353. We then watched a video about how to cite in MLA format. The SQ3R studying technique was taught to us by Mike West. Mike West is an employee of FGCU, where he holds a position in the probation office. He provided us with a worksheet to take notes on. We talked about each section of the technique. Lastly, we learned about comma splices, run-ons, fragments, and apostrophes in various ways. We took quizzes on them, we did in class activities based upon them, and we watched videos about them as well. Everything Ive learned thus far in this course will be used in ENC 1102. All of the information, quizzes, etc., is significant because it has enhanced my writing skills a great deal. I can look at my past writings and compare them to my more recent writing projects and I notice

the huge transformation of them. This class has changed my writing ability for the better, and I am thankful for that. As I mentioned before, everything I learn will be transferred to ENC 1102. I will enter into ENC 1102 ready to further my writing skills. I now know and understand how to correctly use apostrophes and punctuation marks. I know how to pick out sentence fragments and comma splices. I will not have to catch up in ENC 1102 when I arrive there next semester. Thank you for everything. I am excited to learn more about writing throughout your class! Sincerely,

Tiana Smith
