Yuchen Hu Mark Welsh HIST-1700-079 6 December 2013 Dueling Documents: Slavery and Secession Jefferson Davis says in The

Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, The truth remains intact and incontrovertible, that the existence of African servitude was in on wise the cause of the conflict, but only an incident. I agree with Davis completely. Abraham Lincoln fights to abolish slavery, but he is not a complete abolitionist. He wrote in his letter: If he can unify the North and South, he would agree to keep the slavery. That is the evidence of Slavery did not cause the Civil War. Slavery is an incident of the Civil War. Jefferson Davis was the president of the Confederacy, he wrote The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government in 1881. And Alexander Stephens who thinks slavery is the cornerstone of the Civil War was the vice president of the new government. Stephens delivered his speech on March 21, 1861, Savannah, Georgia. The Civil War started after one month. As the vice president of the Confederacy, I sure he will protect slavery. The interesting thing is, Jefferson Davis also was a part of Confederacy, but he has different opinion on slavery. The Civil War ended in 1865. In 1881, 16 years after Civil War, I believe that it is because the war is ended, Davis looks this war more objectively. He looks this was as a American, not as the president of the Confederacy. The Civil War is one of important part of American history. Its pretty interesting that you can see people look history differently when the time changes. History seems like pretty far away from us, but history helps us to understand the world we live better, who we are, where are we come from, and where are we going.
