Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection NAEYC Standard:

STANDARD 3. OBSERVING, DOCUMENTING, AND ASSESSING TO SUPPORT YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that child observation, documentation, and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood professionals. They know about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment. They know about and use systematic observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies in a responsible way, in partnership with families and other professionals, to positively influence the development of every child. STANDARD 3b: KNOWING ABOUT AND USING OBSERVATION, DOCUMENTATION, AND OTHER APPROPRIATE ASSESSMENT TOOLS

Brief Description of Evidence:

In my ECED 101 Class, I developed a safety checklist for the classroom. I made arrangements so that I could complete the safety assessment assignment. Both indoor and outdoor safety elements were considered within the guidelines of the early childhood program at Ivy Tech. When I completed the assignment, I wrote a reflection on what I saw and took notes on my observations to improve upon the assignment.

Analysis of What I Learned:

After completing my safety checklist, I am now more able to understand what things would be required for safety in a licensed child care establishment. Because of the reflection on the safety checklist assessment and my observations, I am now better able to understand ways that I could stop potential hazardous situations. The most important thing that I took from this assignment was how important it is to have a safe environment for children I care for.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

This artifact demonstrates that I am competent in Observing, Documenting, and Assessing standard by showing my ability to evaluate using a complete safety checklist assessment, reflect on my observations, provide feedback for improvement, and continue to pursue growth of my knowledge of state licensing requirements.
