Visual Dynamics: Wave Forms Lesson Jeremy Wilson Concept: Dynamics and Science Grade Level: 4th grade

Objectives: Students should be able to define dynamics, crescendo, and decrescendo. Students should be able to identify the correlation between dynamics and amplitude. Students should be able to identify the correlation between pitch and frequency. Materials needed: Computer with internet access and speakers. Projector Access to Quaver

National Standards: 8 ALCOS Standards: 1 Procedures: 1. 2. 3. 4. Listen to the theme of Surprise Symphony Mvmt. 2 by Haydn. Ask the students what changed in the music abruptly. (suddenly loud) Discuss student responses and learn the term dynamics. Using the Waveform Manipulator on Quaver, show how the waves get bigger as the sound gets louder and how the waves get smaller as the sound gets softer. 5. Define amplitude as the height of the waveform. 6. Name the how the sounds get louder a crescendo and softer a decrescendo. 7. Show that as the notes go lower, the waves get further apart. 8. Ask the students what is the musical term for the high or low sounds heard. (pitch) 9. Show that as the pitch goes higher, the waves get closer together. 10. Ask do the waves get taller or shorter as they move closer together or farther apart? (no) 11. Define frequency as the distance between two waves of the form. 12. Ask which musical term correlates with frequency. (pitch) 13. Ask which musical term correlates with amplitude. (dynamics) Listen to the entire Surprise Symphony Mvmt 2 and analyze its form. Look at how musical instruments produce sound. Learn a recorder piece using only B.
