Lesson 3 Modern Era: Appalachian Spring Jeremy Wilson

Concept: Form Grade Level: 5th Grade Objectives: Students should be able to identify different variations in a Theme and Variations piece. Students should be able to identify instruments heard in recordings. Students should be able to identify when in history the Modern Period occured. Materials Needed: Computer with access to the internet and speakers. Copy of "Appalachian Spring" by Aaron Copland SmartBoard

National Standards: 6, 9 ALCOS Standards: 6, 8, 12, 14 Procedures: 1. Board Work (3 & 4) 2. Review all musical eras up to the Modern Era using SmartBoard. 3. Review Theme and Variations form. (Surprise Symphony & Twinkle, Twinkle 4. Listen to and label the theme from "Appalachian Spring." 5. Listen to "Appalachian Spring" identifying each variation. 6. Discuss what Copland did differently in each variation. Follow Up Activities: Have students listen to another piece written in theme and variations form and identify each variation on their own. Emergency Plans: Learn new piece using B, A, and G on recorder.
