Core Objectives/Purpose Connection VS.5 The student will understand the importance of Virginia in the American Revolution by c) identifying the importance of the Battle of Great Bridge, the ride of Jack Jouett, and the American Victory at Yorktown. Students will explore events from VA history by researching and then creatively telling a story in a way that will help them remember their chosen event or historic figure. Students will have the opportunity to explore different art forms. They will have the option of choosing a skit, a song, or a poster for their project. Students will view the video I created using my own photos of Charlottesville. They will review what they know about Jack Jouett as well as follow along and listen to a song about Jack Jouett and his famous ride to Charlottesville.

Inspiration for lesson: I am originally from Louisa County, Va. I learned about Jack Jouett as a 4th grader at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School and his story has always stuck with me. (mostly because I claim that we are from the same place) Jack Jouett was from a small town in Louisa County called Cuckoo and when he intercepted the message that the British were on their way to Charlottesville, he rode through the night all the way to Monticello to warn Thomas Jefferson. In my video I created on my computer using imovie, I used a series of images from around Louisa County as well as several of Charlottesville and Monticello. There are several songs as well as sound effects in the background. Written captions explain the story and I encourage students to read along with the images. The really enjoy seeing my parents house and seeing where I grew up. I lways have some students ask if I was alive when Jack Jouett rode by my house. I remind them that Jack Jouett lived during the Revolutionary War and then ask them how old they think I am.

"Jack Jouett's Ride" lyrics by Tim Sparling & Allen Werneken

There's something moving in the moonlight June night in 1781 Jack Jouett said, "Sallie, there's British on the road," and he knew what must be done He had to warn Thomas Jefferson and Henry, and Harrison and Nelson Who had just declared their independence from the very ones Who would kill them if they found them there So he just kept riding Forty miles and forever and a road From the Cuckoo down to Charlottesville From Louisa through Virginia Through the Blue Ridge riding still Forty miles and forever and a road Monticello and the swamp from Castle Hill From Louisa through Virginia Through the Blue Ridge riding still Keep riding As the quiet of the first light pushed the night to make the mountain dawn Red Coat Colonel and the Green Dragoons arrived to find them gone There was never a doubt when he and Sallie set out Jack Jouett had a place in time Where one man's will is living still when freedom was on the line So he just kept riding Forty miles and forever and a road From the Cuckoo down to Charlottesville From Louisa through Virginia Through the Blue Ridge riding still Forty miles and forever and a road Monticello and the swamp from Castle Hill From Louisa through Virginia Through the Blue Ridge riding still Keep riding If he was not there that night on the back of that old horse If Jack had decided not to ride From Louisa through Virginia Forty miles and forever and a road From the Cuckoo down to Charlottesville Jack and Sally they had a place When freedom was on the line From Louisa through Virginia Jack he just keeps riding Well Jack keeps riding Still keeps riding Just keep riding music and lyrics by Tim Sparling & Allen Werneken 1995 by Tim Sparling and Electron Farm Publications

Circle Map for brainstorming historic figures and events. Students may use my pattern or choose to create their own. The name of the person or the event would be in the middle of the circle and the text boxes would be filled with information about the individual or specific event.
