Test Structure
The test is a multiple-choice question written by pharmacists who, like most of your pharmacy instructors, have Ph.D / masterps degrees and clinical expertise in particular areas.
Technical Institute for Health Training Dr. Ramadan AL-Shdefat Pharmacy 3
The test is designed for one purpose: to determine whether itps appropriate for you to receive a license to practice as a pharmacy technician. By passing the test, you demonstrate that you possess the minimum level of knowledge necessary to practice pharmacy safely.
Testing by Computer
The test, like many standardized test today, is administered by computer, or by answered on computer sheet (filling the empty circles using sharpening pencils). A B C D 1. O O 2. O
q q
O O
To focus on the question and avoid becoming overwhelmed, apply proven strategies for answering the questions, including: Determining what the question asks. Rephrasing the question. Choosing the best option. Read the question twice. If the answer is not apparent, rephrase the question in simpler, more personal terms. Breaking down the question into easier, less intimidating terms may help you to focus more accurately on the correct answer.

6. Ophthalmic Products:
The highest standards are necessary in the compounding of ophthalmic preparations and the greatest care is required in their use. It is necessary that all ophthalmic preparations (eye drops, eye lotions, eye ointments, contact lenses, and solid dosage forms) are sterile and essentially free from foreign particles.
7. Parenteral Solution:
Any product that is injected directly in to a fluid system of the body (Blood, lymph, intra or extra cellular liquids). It must be sterile and pyrogen free. A. B. C. Intravenous (I.V.). Intramuscular (I.M.). Subcutaneous (S.C.).
Solution:
- Is a homogenous mixture that is prepared by dissolving a solid, liquid or gas in another liquid.
Types of solutions: 1. Aqueous solution. - Douches. - Enemas. - Gargles. - Mouth washes. - Syrup.
Pharmacy 14
2. Non aqueous solution. - Elixirs. - Spirits. 3. Special types. - Tinctures. - Astringents. Solvent used to prepare solution: 1. Water (purified water, water for injection). 2. Alcohol (Ethanol). 3. Glycerin.
Pharmacy 15
Lotions:
Are liquid suspension intended for external application to the body. Ex Calamine Lotion, Benzyl benzoate. Shake the bottle before use. Store below 25rC. Using preservative to avoid contamination. Should be labeled for external use.
Ointment:
- Are semisolid preparations intended for external use. - Ointment bases: 1. Oleaginous or hydrocarbon bases. 2. Absorption bases. 3. Emulsion bases. 4. Water soluble bases. Methods of preparation: 1. Fusion method 2. mechanical incorporation
Technical Institute for Health Training Dr. Ramadan AL-Shdefat Pharmacy 16
a. Using glass mortar and pestle called trituration b. Using glass slab and spatula called as lavigation.
Creams:
- Are semisolid preparations usually either: 1. o/w emulsion (Aqueous cr.) 2. w/o emulsion (Oily cr.)
Pasts:
- Are concentrates of absorptive powder dispersed in petrolatum or hydrophilic petrolatum. - Are semisolid preparations intended for external use. - ** Paste differs from ointment in containing a large amount of finely powdered solid.
Tablets:
- Methods of preparation: 1. Wet granulation. 2. Dry granulation. 3. Direct compression. - Classification of Tablets: 1. Tablet for Oral ingestion. 2. Tablet used in oral cavity. 3. Tablet used to prepare solution.

Tablets may be coated for number of reasons:1. To mask taste, odor, color of drug. 2. To control release of drug. 3. to protect drug from acid content of stomach. 4. To incorporate another drug and provide sequential release. 5. To avoid incompatibility. 6. To improve appearance. Enteric coated tablets:Are coated and remain intact in the stomach but give their ingredient in the intestine. E.g. ecotrin Coating materials are fats - fatty acid s waxes - PEG - Sugar and chocolate.
- Excipients of Tablets: 1. Diluents: Lactose s starch s cellulose. 2. Binder: Starch s cellulose s gelatin. 3. Disintegrate: Starch der. s Cellulose der.
4. Lubricant anti adherent and glidants: Magnesium and Calcium stearate. 5. Coloring agents. 6. Flavoring agents. 7. Sweeteners:- e.g. saccharin and aspartame

Pharmaceutical Calculations
Systems of Weights and Measures
Metric System:
1. Units of Weight: Name of the unit Kilogram Gram Milligram Microgram Abbreviation kg g mg g Relationship 1/1000 (0.001)kg 1/1000 (0.001)g 1/1000 (0.001)mg

2. Volume: Name of the unit Liter Milliliter Micro liter 3. Length: Name of the unit Meter Centimeter Millimeter Abbreviation m cm mm Relationship 1/100 (0.01)m 1/1000 (0.001)m Abbreviation L ml l Relationship 1/1000 (0.001)L 1/1000 (0.001)ml
Conversion:
Exact equivalents are used for the conversion of specific quantities in the pharmaceutical formulas and prescription compounding 1. Mass 1 gram (g) = 15.432 grain 1 kilogram (kg) = 2.204 pound 1 grain (gr) = 0.065 mg 2. Volume 1 liter (l) = 35.2 fluid ounces = o.22 gallon

= 5 ml
1 milliliter (ml)
Calculation of doses:
Total amount of doses = size of dose t number of doses
Example # 1: How many drops would be prescribed in each dose of liquid medicine in 15ml contained 60 doses? 1 ml = 32 drops 15 ml = ?? drops
Example # 2: How many doses are found in 10g, if the dose is 200mg? Number of doses = 10g / 0.2g = 50 doses
Pharmacy 21
Example # 3: How many milliliters of liquid medicines would provide a patient with 2 table spoonful twice a day for 8 days? Total amount = 2 t 15ml x 2 t 8 = 480ml
Dosage Forms:
Iodine Solution 2% w/v Normal Saline 0.9% w/v Glycerol Solution 10% v/v Potassium Permanganate Solution 0.1% w/v Mercurochrome Solution 2% w/v Alcohol Solution 70% Dextrose Solution 5%
Apparatus: Baker, Watch glass, Measuring cylinder, Glass rod, Balance, Mortar, Pestle, Slab, Spatula. Percentage Concentration of Solution are Expressed as follow: 1. Percent weight in weight ( w/w ) EX. How many gram of substance are needed to prepare 200 gram of 10%w/w?
Pharmacy 22
2. Percent weight in volume ( w/v ) Ex.How many grams of drug are needed to make 120 ml of 25% solution?
3. Percent volume in volume (V/V) Ex How many ml of pure alcohol needed to make 500ml of 10% alcohol?

Other Concentration Expression Molarity (M): is the expression of the number of moles of solute dissolved per liter of solution. It is calculated by dividing the moles of solute by the volume of solution in liters
EX.. How many grams of NaOH we need to prepare 0.5M solution of NaOH (MW=40g/mole) in 1L of H2O ?
