The document summarizes a talk given by Yongyuth Yuthavong at the BOOST conference in Bangkok about the seven potential careers ("lives") that a scientist can have over their career. The seven lives are: 1) acquiring knowledge, 2) research in their own field, 3) transferring knowledge, 4) management, 5) being a public figure, 6) communicating with society, and 7) living as a normal person. Not all scientists will have all seven lives, but ideally they should have lives as a learner, researcher, and teacher. Non-scientists can also have some of these roles, but a scientist is uniquely positioned to take advantage of all seven potential careers.

The Seven Lives of a Scientist
Yongyuth Yuthavong National Science and Technology Development Agency, Thailand
Young people are blessed
Blessed with a long life ahead Blessed with choice of careers People who choose science as a career are blessed further WITH 7 LIVES!
A scientist can have seven lives!
1st life: Acquiring knowledge
2nd life: Research in your own backyard
3rd life: Transferring knowledge
4th life: Management
5th life: Public person
6th life: Communicating with society
7th life: A normal person
Not all scientists have seven lives
Some prefer to have fewer But they should have at least three: A learner A researcher A teacher
Non-scientists can have many of our lives too!
Science writers Science communicators Science administrators Science ministers BUT If scientists can do these all the better
Other young people than young scientists can be blessed too
Artists, business people, mechanics, taxi drivers. They can be blessed with many lives too But I bet, they are not as exciting as THE 7 LIVES OF A SCIENTIST!
