Daily Lesson Plan for

Course Social Studies & Writing Date Bell(s) or Block Afternoon Topic of Lesson: Writing about Colonial Life VA SOL: History 1.1; Writing 1.13 Essential Question: Students will write about differences in the past and present Key Terms: Then, now, past, present, change, adjectives Engage: (Time: 5 minutes) Tell class that today they are going to write about some of the things weve been learning in Social Studies. This activity will allow us to practice our writing, as well as help us recall the unit we are doing on colonial times. Explore: (Time: 10 minutes) Ask students what they remember about how children lived during colonial times. Make a list of key words on the board that they will be able to use as they complete the graphic organizer. Make sure that schools, clothing, and what children do/did in their free time is discussed. Explain: (Time: 5 minutes) Tell students that they will now complete a graphic organizer about the way children lived during colonial times, and how they live now. Read directions to students and do the G.O. as a group so that all students fill in all sections. Extend: (Time: 15 minutes) When graphic organizers are complete, tell students that they will now write a journal entry about the things they listed on their graphic organizer. They will have 15 minutes to write and illustrate. They are to use the graphic organizer to make sure they discuss all the things listed in their writing. Evaluate: (Time: 10 minutes)

One table will share their journal with the class at the end of the allotted time. Evaluate for how well they used the graphic organizer, and how much information they included. For journal writing, correct spelling is not needed, but students should be able to read what they wrote. Correct capitalization and punctuation is to be evaluated. Materials: Graphic organizer Student journals
