Ryan Quinn Chem Period 1 December 9, 2013 Acid Deposition Lab - Unit 4 Independent Variable: - Fluid input (water

/ water and acid) Dependent Variable: - Length of life in terms of days. Controlled: - Type of plant (3 plants in total - all the same). It is essential that all 3 experimental plants being of the same type so that they there wont be widely varying results. - Amount of time in contact with sunlight. (From dusk to dawn) This variable needs to be fixed for it allows the plants to be measured with the same accuracy. If it were not the same for each plant then the results would not be usable to make an educated conclusion with regards to the hypotheses. - Amount of water put into the soil in the pot. (Acid adds to the amount of water for the second and third experiment that are subject to acid and water for their fluid input) This fixed input is important because it shows the effect that having no acid, 5ml of acid, and 10ml of acid added to the plants will have on their length of life. The water needs to remain constant so as to provide a steady base for the amount of fluids being put into the plants.

Research Question!!: What is the effect that acid in water has on the length of plant life compared to the longevity of a plant that intakes only water? Hypotheses: If acid is added to a plants water intake, then the length of time that the plant is alive will be smaller than if there was only water being given to the plant. Therefore, the more acid that you add, the less time the plant will be alive. This can be shown from the acid deposition reading for when pollutants such as acid when added to water, there is a decrease in the length of plant and animal life because the acids are hurting the environment. When sulfuric acid is added to the atmosphere, it most definitely has a negative effect on plant life, decreasing it by quite a lot.

Materials: - Plant (3 plants of the same type to maintain the correct data usage, - Latex gloves (to protect from the sulfuric acid getting on your skin) - 50 ml water - Measuring beaker (100ml and 50ml) - Syringe - Flask - Sulfuric acid (0ml for 1st plant, 5ml for 2nd plant, and 10ml for 3rd plant) - Plant pot and soil to hold the plant. - Open window so the plant can have availability to sunlight.

Procedure: 1) Get all materials from the above list 2) Gather the necessary information from the previous week and make sure that the controlled variables have been remaining the same.

Ryan Quinn Chem Period 1 December 9, 2013 3) Put acid (0 mL, 5 mL, 10mL) into the three beakers with the water for each experiment. 4) put acid (0mL, 5mL, and 10mL) and water in all the corresponding plants. 5) make observations and notes on Monday. * Repeat steps

Data Table 1: Plant 1 (no acid) February 3rd February 10th Feburary 17th Plant 2 (5mL of acid) Plant 3 (10mL of acid)

What is Needed? a) How long will we collect data for? Assume changes are gradual We will collect the data for 5 months straight, starting January. b) How often will we collect data? We will collect data every Monday, each week for three months.
