2 Knowledge of Learners and Learning Candidates implement the principles of effective teaching and learning that contribute to an active, inquirybased approach to learning. Candidates make use of a variety of instructional strategies and assessment tools to design and develop digital-age learning experiences and assessments in partnership with classroom teachers and other educators. Candidates can document and communicate the impact of collaborative instruction on student achievement. Artifacts ISTC 541- Tech Integrated Lesson Plan ISTC 789 - Slam Dunk 6th grade Health Dangers of Smoking Description Library Media Specialists must demonstrate that they are effective educators that work to raise the overall performance of the students in their schools by implementing best teaching practices such as inquiry based approaches to learning and highly engaging lessons that incorporate 21st Century Skills such as collaboration and technology based instruction and assessment. The artifacts connected to this standard were created with a particular middle school setting in mind. This particular middle school is the third largest school in Baltimore County and has experienced the process of restructuring due to low MSA test scores for multiple, consecutive years. This provided a great framework to create lessons that were reflective of best teaching practices and digital learning incorporating 21st Century Skills since those types of lessons would be effective in meeting the remediation needs of this school. Currently, the population of this school is composed of eighty-eight percent African Americans and includes grades sixth through eight. Fifty-five percent of these students receive free and reduced meals and student attendance is overall high. Student reading performance as measured by the Maryland State Assessment ranges from thirty four percent achieving advanced status, forty six percent reaching proficient status, and twenty percent struggling at basic status. My Tech Integrated Lesson Plan and self-created Slam Dunk would be very beneficial to these students since they reflect an inquiry-based approach to learning, opportunities to think critically and collaborate to solve problems, and are engaging based on students interests in technology. Relevance The Tech Integrated Lesson that I created for IST 541 implements a variety of instructional strategies and assessment tools that includes creation of a character poster using the online Glogster program. At the time this lesson was created, Glogster was accessible with no charge for teachers and students. This lesson is based on the Reading/Language Arts objective of analyzing characters thoughts, words, and actions in order to deduce character traits which allows collaboration with the teachers in these content areas. The Constructivist approach applied in the lesson progression, allows students to connect their prior knowledge of observing peoples thoughts, words and actions and make inferences about a persons character traits based on these observations. Throughout the progression of lessons in this five day lesson plan, students are expected to build on their previous knowledge, collaborate and communicate with classmates, draw conclusions and make inferences, and apply their new knowledge and innovation to create a product that demonstrates their technological and critical thinking abilities. During my internship (ISTC 789), I was given the task to create a Slam Dunk about the dangers of smoking and how to choose a smoke-free life to enhance the 2013-2014, 6th grade Health curriculum. Throughout this Slam

Dunk, there are multiple inquiry based approaches as students are lead to various research sites and are asked to perform various tasks by applying their new knowledge. As a final assessment, students will use Web 2.0 tools to create a Public Service Announcement to discourage teens to stop smoking. There are several interactive extensions included beyond print activities that allow students to calculate how much of a persons life span is shortened by smoking an imputed amount and viewing the effect on internal organs as you scroll over a body form. Students final products are graded with a rubric that matches the specific Web 2.0 tool. Analysis It is unfortunate that such a great product as Glogster is no longer available free of charge for teachers and students. Google is very user friendly and highly engaging for students to use to create interactive posters. Characterization is a very important reading skill for students to acquire however creating simple character webs does not push students to the highest level of thinking or creating. As students analyze character traits in order to choose symbols and media from the Glogster program to represent characters traits, their thinking and creating skills are pushed to another level. Students did very well creating their products and progressing through the lesson steps to achieve the goal and students were very motivated to use the technology while some frustration did occur as students first learned the program. Another challenge that presented itself is the extra time required to teach students how to use Glogster as well as the extra time to allow them to create their product. As curriculum is continuously overloaded and fast paced, there is little time incorporated for these types of products. I greatly enjoyed being a part of the curriculum writing process this past summer during my internship and felt that the opportunity to collaborate with a different curriculum area was very helpful to me as a professional. I also hope that my experiences from this cohort as well as my experiences as a reading teacher contributed to create a new piece of the Health curriculum that will greatly enhance student learning and engagement. Many of the interns questioned if what we were creating would actually be implemented since we are aware of the reality of the many constraints placed on teachers in regards to time and technology accessibility. I think that implementing my Slam Dunk into the curriculum with advocate for library media specialists since I hope that when teachers see this piece added to their curriculum, they will reach out to their LMS for assistance and that LMS will reach out to Health teachers and encourage them to use this Slam Dunk with their students either in its entirety or partial segments since this Slam Dunk can be useful in both approaches. 2.2Standard Videos & Links 2.3Standard to Collaborative 2.4Standard WorkConceptual 3.2 Standard MapStandard 3.3Standard 3.4Standard 1.2Standard 4.2Standard 1.3Standard 4.3Standard 1.4Standard 4.4Standard 5.2Standard 5.3Standard 5.4
