Travis Rutledge English 1101 Professor Dutta 12 December 2013 Capstone Reflection How has my attitude changed towards

reading and writing? Explain. I have never been one to freely write. I am very conserved about my writing, only writing when it is required of me. For this reason I have always been afraid of English class, because of the fact I will be having to write and have people read and critique it. However, throughout the semester I became more comfortable writing in class, because of the journals. The journals were very informal and they were my own pure thoughts, not formatted a certain way for a paper to be critiqued. When I learned they would be put in to a portfolio at the end of the semester, I was okay with it. My attitude towards reading hasnt really changed much though. I have never enjoyed having to read for classes, because it usually takes all of the fun out of the book, with having to over analyze it. Reading for this semester seemed very different for some reason however. I enjoyed reading nearly all of the articles, because after reading it, I could take away a new outlook on literacy without having to over analyze it, like I was used to in high school. Has my writing process changed at all? What has changed? How has this helped outside of English 1101? When it comes to my writing process, I am a strong man of habit. I have always done the same thing when I write. Sitting there and thinking for a little while about the prompt or what I want to write is always my first step, then a draft, edits, and a final draft. This hasnt changed much over the semester, except for the journals, which I just wrote whatever came to mind. Has my writing changed this semester? How and why? My writing has seemed to change depending on what class I am in. Being an engineer, I have to write solely in passive tense, using no personal pronouns. In English 1101, which was mostly reflection and analytical study of literacy, I could usually write however I wanted. My writing as a whole I feel however has become more analytical and straightforward. What have I learned this semester?

I have started to begin thinking a term I once thought was just a simple definition is actually so much more. Learning so much about literacy, literacy sponsors, and literacy environments, I feel like I can understand myself a little more than I did before. This class helped me to understand people and how their various literacies makes them similar but different.
