crown, placing the Papal States under Frankis h protection.[40] The Duchy of Spoleto south of Rome was also acquired in 774, w hile in the central western parts of Europe, the Duchy of Bavaria was absorbed a nd the Bavarian policy continued of establishing tributary marches, (borders pro tected in return for tribute or taxes) among the Slavic Serbs, and Czechs. The r emaining power confronting the Franks in the east were the Avars, however Charle magne went on acquiring other Slav areas, including Bohemia, Macedonia, Moravia, Austria and Croatia.[40] In 789, Charlemagne turned his attention to Bavaria. H e claimed Tassilo was an unfit ruler, due to his oath-breaking. The charges were exaggerated, but Tassilo was deposed anyway and put in the monastery of Jumiges. In 794, he was made to renounce any claim to Bavaria for himself and his family (the Agilolfings) at the synod of Frankfurt. Bavaria was subdivided into Franki sh counties, as had been done with Saxony.
