Raymond Wen B-1 Geometric Character Analysis Draft Characters are the most significant part of a story, without

it the story would very unexciting and dull. The character also should have complex relationships with other characters to intensify the storys plot. It helps the reader understand the theme and it lets reader relate to the story which lets them understand the story easier. In Tangerine, the author makes the story interesting by using Pauls perspective to manipulate what the reader thinks. Characters and their relationships are essential to an effective narrative because it make the story interesting, helps the reader relate to the story, and it helps convey the theme or main idea easier. Erik is the antagonist of the book and is a multifaceted character. The shape of Erik is a sharp and many side geometric shape. This is similar to Erik, because Erik has many sides to him like the shape. Erik is impulsive and violent, like when he punches Tino in his face because he insulted him, Erik lashed out, smashing the back of the his hand across Tinos face, smashing him so hard that Tino spun halfway around in the air and landed on the grass (205) But in contrast, Erik also has another side which he uses to pretend, to his parents and other people that he is outstanding person even when he isnt. When the Fishers move in, and Erik pretends to be interested in academics when he really wasnt, Erik was as phony as he needed to be (22) Erik persona of a shape is red. Red is symbolic for meaning impulsive, violence and desire. These are three accurate descriptions of Erik. Erik is very impulsive and violent, when he gets angry or offended or his ego is damaged. For an example, when he helps Vincent Castor put spray paint in Pauls eyes he helped him which was very violent and cruel and it could have almost killed and blinded Paul, and [Paul] remembers Eriks fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them. They left me screaming and rolling around on the floor of the garage (263-264) Erik is very violent and can do a lot of damage to the victim, both physically

Erik has lots of desire, he wants to be a very good football player, and get a scholarship to a good college, Erik- Scholarship Offers, (159). Eriks placement of the shape is away from the other shapes/character. In the book, after he and Arthur start to rob, and performs crimes he is more solitary and is away from other people. Even though he has a friend, he isnt very outgoing, but more secretive and clandestine. He is also not a very close brother to Paul either. He is very malicious, and does not have a close relationship to Paul. The arrows represent how Erik affects other people, in a negative way. He has a negative relationship with his brother and Joey. He made him very angry and hurt Joey emotionally my insulting his deceased brother. Eriks brother, Paul and his friend Joey are also very important individuals that also establish the mood of the story. Paul and Joey have a close relationship, but they are two very different characters. Paul is a round circle it is like a round character. Paul can have many different characters, sometimes he is scared and timid of what will happen next, like when he ratted out the kids from Tangerine about destroying the exhibit This whole thing [ratting out the kids] was really bothering me (79) But sometimes he shows bravery, like when he rescued kids out from the sinkhole. We pulled and grabbed at kids as they made their way to the slippery incline on top (82) Paul is also round because he is very well- rounded, he is good at sports, academics and other things. However, Joey is a triangle, because he is narrow- minded. He has some prejudice to other minorities in Tangerine. [Joey] let [Paul] talk [him] into this place, This place is like darkest Africa. Like the Amazon jungle(150) Joey and Paul are different colors, Paul is yellow because he is attention attracting. Paul got a lot of attention, because he became a soccer star on the Tangerine soccer team. But, ironically he also doesnt get attention at all from his parents

Raymond Wen B-1 Geometric Character Analysis Draft sometimes because they only pay attention to Erik. [Paul is] saying [Dad] knows everything about Eriks season but [Dad] knows nothing about [Pauls season].[Paul is] right and [Dad is] sorry (234) Joey is blue because of his loyalty. Joey is loyal because even though him and Paul have gone through many fights they have still been very good friends. The arrows represent how they support each other, Paul helped out Joey when he was mourning his brothers death, and Joey also helped Paul out too. The placement of their geometric shapes represents how close and friendly they are together. They are best friends and try to be together as long as they are possible. The relationships of the characters help convey the message to the reader. The relationship between the characters is a really strong and connected one. They all affect one and another differently. Joey and Paul have a very strong relationship; they are best friends and always support each other. Erik relationship on Joey and Paul is very weak, and they have a very harmful relationship, the longer they are in the relationship the more harmful it will get. The geometric design shows the bond of them by the arrows, placement, shape and color. Joey and Pauls shapes are close by will Erik is farther away. Characters and their relationships are essential to an effective narrative because it make the story interesting, helps the reader relate to the story, and it helps convey the theme or main idea easier. The geometric character analysis adds to the understanding of the characters because it shows how you can analyze what the author has gave to you, and it shows how well your depth and understanding of the story is.
