Whitney Hogenson Tiered Assignment Go Math chapter 2.

6 Fourth Grade Standard (Core Domain): Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. Objective: Students will be able to use expanded form to multiply a multi-digit number by a 1-digit number. I am teaching students about the distributive property and how we can take a big number and put it into expanded notation and multiply each addend of the number and multiply that by the first digit. Then after we have each answer to the equations we then can add all of the partial products to get our product. For one group during the lesson I will have them practice using the distributive property including the area model. They will have the equation, for example 5x143. They will have a page of these problems and then will have to take 143 and write it in expanded notation and multiply 5 by each addend and add the partial products together. They will also have an area model to fill in to help my visual learners. For my struggling students, I will have them do the same problems, but they will also get the area model on the side to help them split the number into expanded notation. I will also give them the three equations with blank spaces that they just have to fill in, such as: ___x___= ___x___= ___x___= ___+___+___= For my gifted students, I will have them only use the problems. They will not have the area model. They will show me the three equations when doing expanded notation and using the distributive property. They will also get problems with more digits in the number. They will multiply a 1-digit number by a 3,4,5, and 6-digit numbers. This will help them have practice in expanded notation of bigger numbers, but still be able to use the distributive property when multiplying. Some students might even be able to try the problem without using the distributive property to check their answers.
