Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understanding of operation on whole numbers.

3. a) Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.

Grades: 3-5

The manipulative that I selected was Fractions-adding. This activity allows the students to visually see the fractions and what they represent when adding them together and how the fractions have the same whole. The students will also be able to rename the two fractions so that the denominators are the same. This will help them to remember that they can not add fractions that do not have the same denominator. I think this virtual manipulative would be great for students because it does not only show them visually in a colored bar the fractions that they are using, but they are changing the denominator to add these two fractions together to get the same whole. The students will not be able to add the fractions if they do not find the correct denominator for the fractions first. This will help students when working on problems on paper and pencil. I think that the parent/teacher information will really help parents and teachers understand how to use this really awesome virtual manipulative.
