Itisformedbytwopeaksofsimilaraltitude, connectedbyanaturalarchwhichhasgiventhe groupitsname(meaning"HoledMountain"in Italian).Thehole,nearlycircularinshape,hasa heightofc.12m,whilethearchitselfissome8m thick.ThearchcanbeseenfrombothVersiliaand GarfagnanavalleysatthetwosidesoftheMonte Forato. Lookingfromsomespots,thearchcreatesaneffect ofdoublesunset(ordawn,likeon22Junefrom Volegno),whenthesunfallsbetweenthearch, soonreappearingforashortwhileinthehole below.
