Final Exam, Math 520A, Spring 2006

You must work on these problems yourself ! You are allowed to use Hungerfords Algebra and the class notes only! Staple your solutions with this sheet and return everything by Tuesday, May 16, before 2:00 PM. 1. (6 pts) (i) Determine the largest possible order of an element in G = Z36 Z24 Z15 . (ii) Prove or disprove: Let H = Z2 Z2 Z3 Z3 . Then G contains a subgroup isomorphic to H . 2. (10 pts) Let D4 = {e, a, a2 , a3 , b, ba, ba2 , ba3 }. It is known that D4 has exactly 3 normal subgroups of order 4. (i) Provide a list of elements for each normal subgroup of order 4. (ii) Show that D4 has exactly one normal subgroup of order 2 and four non-normal subgroups of order 2. 3. (10 pts) Show that Z[ 7] is not a UFD, but it does satisfy ACCPI. 4. (10 pts) Let I and J be ideals in a commutative ring with identity R such that I + J = R. Show that I J = IJ . 5. (10 pts) Compute [Q(31/5 , 31/3 ) : Q]. Find C (it is not unique) such that Q(31/5 , 31/3 , ) : Q is the smallest Galois extension which contains Q(31/5 , 31/3 ). Finally, compute [Q(31/5 , 31/3 , ) : Q]. 6. (10 pts) (i) Find a splitting eld extension E of f (x) = x8 1 F5 [x] and compute Gal(E/F5 ). (ii) (This part is independent of (i)) Is x3 + 3x + 2 irreducible over F25 ? Explain! 7. (10 pts) Compute [L : Q], where L is a splitting eld extension of x6 2 Q[x]. Describe the xed subeld L L, where is the group generated by complex conjugation. 8. (10 pts) Let An = Q(21/n ). Find all automorphisms of An xing Q, for every n 1. Find all m so that A12 : Am : Q. Which of the subelds Am A12 contain 21/3 + 21/2 ? (Hint: Use Theorem A) 9. (14 pts) Use Kaplanskys theorem to nd the Galois group of f (x) = x4 + 5 Q[x]. Show that L = Q(8 , 51/4 ) is a splitting eld extension of f (x). By using the fundamental theorem of Galois theory nd all intermediate elds L : M : Q, such that M : Q is normal (and Galois). Draw a diagram of eld embeddings for these elds. (Do not include elds M , such that M : Q is not normal!) 10. (10 pts) (i) Find GalK (f ), f (x) = x3 + 3x 3 K [x], where K = Q, K = Q( 39) and K = Q( 2). (ii) Find GalK (f ), f (x) = x4 10x2 + 1 K [x], where K = Q and K = Q( 2). Extra Credit: Describe Gal(Q(sin(2/n))/Q), for all n N.
