CONFESSION
Examination of Conscience
Preliminary
Besides telling the nature of our sins, we must also recollect, as far as
possible, the NUMBER of times we have committed them, telling also
(and only) those CIRCUMSTANCES which at times may either make a
venial sin mortal or a mortal sin notably worse.
Second Commandment
1. Have I used God's name in vain by way of profanity?
3
Third Commandment
1. Have I missed Mass on Sundays or holydays through my own
fault?
2. Have I been late for Mass through my own negligence?
3. Have I been inattentive at Mass or otherwise failed in
reverence for the Most Blessed Sacrament?
4. Have I done unnecessary servile work (physical labour) or
shopping on Sunday?
5. Have I eaten flesh meat on Friday (especially on Good Friday)
or on Ash Wednesday?
Fourth Commandment
1. Have I been disrespectful to my parents or neglected them?
2. Have I failed in obedience or reverence to others in authority?
3. Have I mistreated my wife or children?
4. Have I been disobedient or disrespectful to my husband?
5. Regarding my children:
-Have I neglected their material needs?
-Have I failed to care for their early Baptism or their proper
religious instruction?
-Have I allowed them to neglect their religious duties?
-Have I tolerated their keeping questionable company or go
steady dating?
-Have I otherwise failed to discipline them?
-Have I given bad them example?
-Have I interfered with their freedom to marry or follow a religious
vocation?
OTHER SINS
1. Have I knowingly caused others to sin?
2. Have I cooperated in the sins of others?
3. Have I sinned by gluttony?
4. Have I become intoxicated?
5
Act of Contrition
My God,
I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you
whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help,
to do penance, to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Saviour JesusChrist suffered and died for us.
In His Name, my God, have mercy.
SALVA ME!
O Salutaris
(See Music Sheet)
O Saving Victim opening wide
The gate of heaven to us below!
Our foes press on from every side:
Your aid supply your strength bestow.
Amen.

Tantum Ergo
(See Music Sheet)
Down in adoration falling,
Lo! the sacred Host we hail;
Lo! o'er ancient forms departing,
newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith for all defects supplying,
where the feeble sense fail.
To the everlasting Father,
and the Son who reigns on high,
With the Holy Ghost proceeding
forth from Each eternally,
be salvation, honour, blessing,
might and endless majesty.
Amen.

Psalms: 139:7-12
7
Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy
8
presence? If I ascend to heaven, thou art there! If I make my bed in
Sheol, thou art there!
9
If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the
10
sea, even there thy hand shall lead me, and thy right hand shall hold
me.
11
If I say, "Let only darkness cover me, and the light about me be night,"
12
even the darkness is not dark to thee, the night is bright as the day; for
darkness is as light with thee.
we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with
31
them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' Thus you witness against
32
yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill
up, then, the measure of your fathers.
15
We are told but little of her childhood. She was married early in life to
Patritius who held an official position in Tagaste. He was a pagan, though
like so many at that period, his religion was no more than a name; his
temper was violent and he appears to have been of dissolute habits.
Consequently Monica's married life was far from being a happy one,
more especially as Patritius's mother seems to have been of a like
disposition with himself. There was of course a gulf between husband
and wife; her almsdeeds and her habits of prayer annoyed him, but it is
said that he always held her in a sort of reverence. Monica was not the
only matron of Tagaste whose married life was unhappy, but, by her
sweetness and patience, she was able to exercise a veritable apostolate
amongst the wives and mothers of her native town; they knew that she
suffered as they did, and her words and example had a proportionate
effect.
Three children were born of this marriage, Augustine the eldest, Navigius
the second, and a daughter, Perpetua. Monica had been unable to
secure baptism for her children, and her grief was great when Augustine
fell ill; in her distress she besought Patritius to allow him to be baptized;
he agreed, but on the boy's recovery withdrew his consent. All Monica's
anxiety now centred in Augustine; he was wayward and, as he himself
tells us, lazy. He was sent to Madaura to school and Monica seems to
have literally wrestled with God for the soul of her son. A great
consolation was vouchsafed her — in compensation perhaps for all that
she was to experience through Augustine — Patritius became a
Christian. Meanwhile, Augustine had been sent to Carthage, to prosecute
his studies, and here he fell into grievous sin. Patritius died very shortly
after his reception into the Church and Monica resolved not to marry
again. At CarthageAugustine had become a Manichean and when on his
return home he ventilated certain heretical propositions she drove him
away from her table, but a strange vision which she had urged her to
recall him. It was at this time that she went to see a certain holybishop,
16
whose name is not given, but who consoled her with the now famous
words, "the child of those tears shall never perish." There is no more
pathetic story in the annals of theSaints than that of Monica pursuing her
wayward son to Rome, wither he had gone by stealth; when she arrived
he had already gone to Milan, but she followed him. Here she found St.
Ambrose and through him she ultimately had the joy of seeing Augustine
yield, after seventeen years of resistance. Mother and son spent six
months of true peace at Cassiacum, after which time Augustine was
baptized in the church of St. John the Baptist at Milan. Africa claimed
them however, and they set out on their journey, stopping at
CivitàVecchia and at Ostia. Here death overtook Monica and the finest
pages of his "Confessions" were penned as the result of the emotion
Augustine then experienced.
St. Monica was buried at Ostia, and at first seems to have been almost
forgotten, though her body was removed during the sixth century to a
hidden crypt in the church of St. Aureus. About the thirteenth century,
however, the cult of St. Monica began to spread and a feast in her honour
was kept on 4 May. In 1430 Martin V ordered the relics to be brought to
Rome. Many miracles occurred on the way, and the cultus of St. Monica
was definitely established. Later the Archbishop of Rouen, Cardinal
d'Estouteville, built a church at Rome in honour of St. Augustine and
deposited the relics of St. Monica in a chapel to the left of the high altar.
The Office of St. Monica however does not seem to have found a place in
the Roman Breviary before the sixteenth century.

We will confine ourselves to sketching the three periods of this great life:
(1) the young wanderer's gradual return to the Faith; (2) the doctrinal
development of the Christian philosopher to the time of his episcopate;
and (3) the full development of his activities upon the Episcopal throne of
Hippo.

Gospel:Mark 6:17-29
17
For Herod had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for the
sake of Hero'di-as, his brother Philip's wife; because he had married her.
18
For John said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's
19
wife." And Hero'di-as had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him.
20
But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a
righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he was
25
21
much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly. But an opportunity came
when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers
22
and the leading men of Galilee. For when Hero'di-as' daughter came in
and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the
23
girl, "Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will grant it." And he vowed to
her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom."
24
And she went out, and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she
25
said, "The head of John the baptizer." And she came in immediately
with haste to the king, and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once
26
the head of John the Baptist on a platter." And the king was exceedingly
sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break
27
his word to her. And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard
and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the
28
prison, and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the
29
girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard of it, they came and
took his body, and laid it in a tomb.
26
Psalm:Psalm 15:2-5
2
He who walks blamelessly, and does what is right, and speaks truth from
3
his heart; who does not slander with his tongue, and does no evil to his
4
friend, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbour; in whose eyes a
reprobate is despised, but who honours those who fear the LORD; who
5
swears to his own hurt and does not change; who does not put out his
money at interest, and does not take a bribe against the innocent. He
who does these things shall never be moved.
that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit
orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from
the world.
1
Now when the Pharisees gathered together to him, with some of the
2
scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his
3
disciples ate with hands defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees,
and all the Jews, do not eat unless they wash their hands, observing the
4
tradition of the elders; and when they come from the market place, they
do not eat unless they purify themselves; and there are many other
traditions which they observe, the washing of cups and pots and vessels
5
of bronze.) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your
disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with
6
hands defiled?" And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you
hypocrites, as it is written, `This people honors me with their lips, but their
7
heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines
8
the precepts of men.' You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast
14
the tradition of men." And he called the people to him again, and said to
15
them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a
man which by going into him can defile him; but the things which come
21
out of a man are what defile him." For from within, out of the heart of
22
man, come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, coveting,
23
wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All
these evil things come from within, and they defile a man."

Pray for us, O glorious St. Michael, Prince of the Church of Jesus

ADORATION
Eucharistic Adoration
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is one of the best ways to spend
time with Jesus. There is so much noise around us these days. Spending
a quiet hour with Jesus in humble adoration will bring many graces and
blessings to you. Things that you have never even considered before will
now be made present to you. Bad things that would have happened to
you will now not happen. Here are some thoughts about what Jesus is
asking you during this time. As He told Peter, "Could you not spend one
hour with me?"
"MY CHILD, you need not know much in order to please Me; only love
Me dearly. Speak to Me as you would talk to your mother, if she had
taken you in her arms. Have you no one to recommend to Me? Tell Me
the names of your relations, of your friends; after each name add what
you wish Me to do for them. Ask a great deal: I love generous hearts
that forget themselves for others.
TELL ME about the poor whom you want to help, the sick whom you
have seen suffer, the sinner whom you would convert, the persons who
are alienated from you, and whose affections you wish to win back. For
all recite a fervent prayer. Remind Me that I have promised to grant
every prayer that comes from the heart; and surely the prayers are
heartfelt which we say for those whom we love, and who love us.
HAVE YOU no favors to ask for yourself'? Write, if you like, a long list of
all your wishes of all the needs of your soul--and come and read it to
Me. Tell Me simply how self-indulgent you are, how proud, how touchy,
how selfish, how cowardly, how idle; ask Me to help you to improve.
Poor child! Do not blush! There are in heaven many saints who had the
32
same faults as you; they prayed to Me, and, little by little, they were
cured.
DO NOT hesitate to ask for the goods of body and mind--for health, for
memory, for success. I can give everything, and I always give when the
gifts would make souls more holy. What do you want today, My child?
Oh, if you knew how I longed to do you good!
AND HAVE you no thoughts of zeal for Me? Are you not anxious to do a
little good for the souls of your friends, for those whom you love, and
who, perhaps, forget Me? Tell Me who interests you, what motives urge
you, what means you wish to take.
CONFIDE TO Me your failures; I will show you the cause. Whom do you
wish to see interested in your work? I am the Master of all hearts, My
child, and I lead them gently where I please. I will place about you those
who are necessary to you; never fear!
ARE THERE about you friends who seem less kind than formerly, who
neglect you through indifference or forgetfulness, without your having
consciously done anything to wound them? Pray for them, and I will
restore them to you, if there companionship is good for you.
HAVE YOU no joys to tell Me? Why not confide to Me your pleasures?
Tell Me what has happened since yesterday to console you, to make you
look happy, to give you joy. An unexpected visit has done you good; a
fear has been suddenly dispelled; you have met with unlooked for
success; you have received some mark of affection in a letter, a present;
some trial has left you stronger than you supposed. All these things, My
child, I obtained for you. Why are you not grateful? Why do you not say,
"I thank you?" Gratitude draws benefits, and the benefactor loves to be
reminded of His bounty.
HAVE YOU no promises to make Me? You know I read the very bottom
of your heart. Men are deceived, but not God; be frank.
ARE YOU resolved to avoid that occasion of sin, to give up the object
which leads you astray--not to read that book which excites your
imagination; to withdraw your friendship from that person who is
irreligious, and whose presence disturbs the peace of your soul? Will you
go at once and be kind to that companion who annoyed you?
Jesus; and tomorrow bring Me a heart even more devoted and loving.
Tomorrow I shall have new favors for you."
You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls
and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world.
O Fountain of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy,
envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.
Amen
