CONFESSION

Prayer Before Confession

O Lord, grant me light to see myself as Thou dost see me and the grace
to be truly and efficaciously contrite for my sins. O Mary, help me to
make a good confession.

Examination of Conscience

In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you
whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help,
to do penance, to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Saviour JesusChrist suffered and died for us.
In His Name, my God, have mercy.

Prayer for a Good Confession

O my God, by my grievous sins I have re-crucified Thy divine Son to
myself and have deserved Thy everlasting wrath in the fires of hell. Even
more, I have been most ungrateful by my sins to Thee, my Heavenly
Father, Who have created me out of nothing, redeemed me by Thy Son,
and sanctified me in the sacraments by Thy Holy Spirit. But Thou hast
spared me to make this confession. Receive me back as Thy prodigal
son and grant me to confess myself well, that I may begin anew to love
Thee with my whole heart and soul, henceforth keeping Thy
Commandments and suffering patiently whatever temporal punishment
for my sins may remain. I hope by Thy goodness and power to obtain
everlasting life in paradise. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

BENEDICTION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

SALVA ME!

A Prayer for Vocations

Lord Jesus, as You once called the first disciples to make them fishers of
men, let Your sweet invitation continue to resound, “Come, follow Me!”
Give young men and women the grace of responding quickly to Your
voice. Support our bishops, priests and consecrated people in their
apostolic labour. Grant perseverance to our seminarians and to all those
who are carrying out the ideal of a life totally consecrated to Your
service. Mary, mother of the Church, model of every vocation, help us to
say “yes” to the Lord who calls us to cooperate in the divine plan of
salvation. Amen.

O Salutaris
(See Music Sheet)
O Saving Victim opening wide
The gate of heaven to us below!
Our foes press on from every side:
Your aid supply your strength bestow.

To your great name be endless praise,

Immortal Godhead, One in Three;
O grant us endless length of days
When our true native land we see.

Amen.
7

Period of Silent Adoration

O Jesus, who are about to give Your benediction to me, and to all who
are here present, I humbly beseech You that it may impart to each and
all of us the special graces we need. Yet more than this I ask. Let Your
blessings go forth far and wide. Let it be felt in the souls of the afflicted
who cannot come here to receive it at Your feet. Let the weak and
tempted feel its power wherever they may be. Grant to me, O Lord, and
to all here present, a strong and personal love of You, a lively horror of
sin, a higher esteem of grace, great zeal for your honour and glory, for
the interests of Your Sacred Heart, for our own sanctification, and for
the salvation of souls. Amen.

Tantum Ergo
(See Music Sheet)
Down in adoration falling,
Lo! the sacred Host we hail;
Lo! o'er ancient forms departing,
newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith for all defects supplying,
where the feeble sense fail.
To the everlasting Father,
and the Son who reigns on high,
With the Holy Ghost proceeding
forth from Each eternally,
be salvation, honour, blessing,
might and endless majesty.
Amen.

First Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:9-13

9
For you remember our labour and toil, brethren; we worked night and
day, that we might not burden any of you, while we preached to you the
10
gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and
11
righteous and blameless was our behaviour to you believers; for you
know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you
12
and encouraged you and charged you to lead a life worthy of God, who
13
calls you into his own kingdom and glory. And we also thank God
constantly for this, that when you received the word of God which you
heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it
really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.

Psalms: 139:7-12
7
Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy
8
presence? If I ascend to heaven, thou art there! If I make my bed in
Sheol, thou art there!
9
If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the
10
sea, even there thy hand shall lead me, and thy right hand shall hold
me.
11
If I say, "Let only darkness cover me, and the light about me be night,"
12
even the darkness is not dark to thee, the night is bright as the day; for
darkness is as light with thee.

Gospel: Matthew 23: 27-32

27
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like
whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are
28
full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. So you also outwardly
appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you build the tombs
30
of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, saying, `If
14

we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with
31
them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' Thus you witness against
32
yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill
up, then, the measure of your fathers.

Saint Monica – Memorial

Widow; born of Christianparents at Tagaste, North Africa, in 333; died at

Ostia, near Rome, in 387.

We are told but little of her childhood. She was married early in life to
Patritius who held an official position in Tagaste. He was a pagan, though
like so many at that period, his religion was no more than a name; his
temper was violent and he appears to have been of dissolute habits.
Consequently Monica's married life was far from being a happy one,
more especially as Patritius's mother seems to have been of a like
disposition with himself. There was of course a gulf between husband
and wife; her almsdeeds and her habits of prayer annoyed him, but it is
said that he always held her in a sort of reverence. Monica was not the
only matron of Tagaste whose married life was unhappy, but, by her
sweetness and patience, she was able to exercise a veritable apostolate
amongst the wives and mothers of her native town; they knew that she
suffered as they did, and her words and example had a proportionate
effect.

Three children were born of this marriage, Augustine the eldest, Navigius
the second, and a daughter, Perpetua. Monica had been unable to
secure baptism for her children, and her grief was great when Augustine
fell ill; in her distress she besought Patritius to allow him to be baptized;
he agreed, but on the boy's recovery withdrew his consent. All Monica's
anxiety now centred in Augustine; he was wayward and, as he himself
tells us, lazy. He was sent to Madaura to school and Monica seems to
have literally wrestled with God for the soul of her son. A great
consolation was vouchsafed her — in compensation perhaps for all that
she was to experience through Augustine — Patritius became a
Christian. Meanwhile, Augustine had been sent to Carthage, to prosecute
his studies, and here he fell into grievous sin. Patritius died very shortly
after his reception into the Church and Monica resolved not to marry
again. At CarthageAugustine had become a Manichean and when on his
return home he ventilated certain heretical propositions she drove him
away from her table, but a strange vision which she had urged her to
recall him. It was at this time that she went to see a certain holybishop,
16

whose name is not given, but who consoled her with the now famous
words, "the child of those tears shall never perish." There is no more
pathetic story in the annals of theSaints than that of Monica pursuing her
wayward son to Rome, wither he had gone by stealth; when she arrived
he had already gone to Milan, but she followed him. Here she found St.
Ambrose and through him she ultimately had the joy of seeing Augustine
yield, after seventeen years of resistance. Mother and son spent six
months of true peace at Cassiacum, after which time Augustine was
baptized in the church of St. John the Baptist at Milan. Africa claimed
them however, and they set out on their journey, stopping at
CivitàVecchia and at Ostia. Here death overtook Monica and the finest
pages of his "Confessions" were penned as the result of the emotion
Augustine then experienced.

St. Monica was buried at Ostia, and at first seems to have been almost
forgotten, though her body was removed during the sixth century to a
hidden crypt in the church of St. Aureus. About the thirteenth century,
however, the cult of St. Monica began to spread and a feast in her honour
was kept on 4 May. In 1430 Martin V ordered the relics to be brought to
Rome. Many miracles occurred on the way, and the cultus of St. Monica
was definitely established. Later the Archbishop of Rouen, Cardinal
d'Estouteville, built a church at Rome in honour of St. Augustine and
deposited the relics of St. Monica in a chapel to the left of the high altar.
The Office of St. Monica however does not seem to have found a place in
the Roman Breviary before the sixteenth century.

In 1850 there was established at Notre Dame de Sion at Paris an

Association of Christian mothers under the patronage of St. Monica; its
object was mutual prayer for sons and husbands who had gone astray.
This Association was in 1856 raised to the rank of an archconfraternity
and spread rapidly over all the Catholic world, branches being
established in Dublin, London, Liverpool, Sydney, and Buenos Aires.
Eugenius IV had established a similar Confraternity long before.

Reading for Mass

(From the Common of holy men and women)
First Reading: Sirach 25: 1-4, 13-16
1
Happy the husband of a good wife, twice-lengthened are his days;
2 3
A worthy wife brings joy to her husband, peaceful and full is his life. A
good wife is a generous gift bestowed upon him who fears the LORD;
4 13
Be he rich or poor, his heart is content, and a smile is ever on his face.
A gracious wife delights her husband, her thoughtfulness puts flesh on
14
his bones; A gift from the LORD is her governed speech, and her firm
15
virtue is of surpassing worth. Choicest of blessings is a modest wife,
16
priceless her chaste person. Like the sun rising in the LORD'S heavens,
the beauty of a virtuous wife is the radiance of her home.

(From the Proper of the Season:Thursday of the Twenty-first week in

Ordinary Time)
First Reading: 1 Thessalonians 3:7-13
7
for this reason, brethren, in all our distress and affliction we have been
8
comforted about you through your faith; for now we live, if you stand fast
9
in the Lord. For what thanksgiving can we render to God for you, for all
10
the joy which we feel for your sake before our God, praying earnestly
night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is
11
lacking in your faith? Now may our God and Father himself, and our
12
Lord Jesus, direct our way to you; and may the Lord make you increase
13
and abound in love to one another and to all men, as we do to you, so
that he may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before our God
and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints
18

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 90:3-5, 12-14, 17

3
Thou turnest man back to the dust, and sayest, "Turn back, O children of
4
men!" For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is
5
past, or as a watch in the night. Thou dost sweep men away; they are
like a dream, like grass which is renewed in the morning:
12
So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
13 14
Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on thy servants! Satisfy us in
the morning with thy steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all
our days.
17
Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish thou the
work of our hands upon us, yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

Gospel: Matthew 24:42-51

42
Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
43
But know this, that if the householder had known in what part of the
night the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have
44
let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready; for the
45
Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect. "Who then is the
faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to
46
give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom
47
his master when he comes will find so doing. Truly, I say to you, he will
48
set him over all his possessions. But if that wicked servant says to
49
himself, `My master is delayed,' and begins to beat his fellow servants,
50
and eats and drinks with the drunken, the master of that servant will
come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not
51
know, and will punish him, and put him with the hypocrites; there men
will weep and gnash their teeth.

Gospel: Luke 7:11-17

(From this reading)

11
Soon afterward he journeyed to a city called Nain, and his disciples and
12
a large crowd accompanied him. As he drew near to the gate of the city,
a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother,
and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her.
13
When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her,
14
"Do not weep." He stepped forward and touched the coffin; at this the
15
bearers halted, and he said, "Young man, I tell you, arise!" The dead
man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother.
16
Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, exclaiming, "A great
prophet has arisen in our midst," and "God has visited his people."
17
This report about him spread through the whole of Judea and in all the
surrounding region.

St. Augustine, Bishop, Doctor of the Church (Memorial)
The great St. Augustine's life is unfolded to us in documents of unrivaled
richness, and of no great character of ancient times have we information
comparable to that contained in the "Confessions", which relate the
touching story of his soul, the "Retractations," which give the history of
his mind, and the "Life of Augustine," written by his friend Possidius,
telling of the saint's apostolate.

We will confine ourselves to sketching the three periods of this great life:
(1) the young wanderer's gradual return to the Faith; (2) the doctrinal
development of the Christian philosopher to the time of his episcopate;
and (3) the full development of his activities upon the Episcopal throne of
Hippo.

First Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8
1
Finally, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as
you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you
2
are doing, you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we
3
gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your
4
sanctification: that you abstain from unchastity; that each one of you
5
know how to take a wife for himself in holiness and honour, not in the
6
passion of lust like heathen who do not know God; that no man
transgress, and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an
7
avenger in all these things, as we solemnly forewarned you. For God
8
has not called us for uncleanness, but in holiness. Therefore whoever
disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to
you.
21

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 10-12

1
The LORD reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!
2
Clouds and thick darkness are round about him; righteousness and
justice are the foundation of his throne.
5
The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the
6
earth. The heavens proclaim his righteousness; and all the peoples
behold his glory.
10
The LORD loves those who hate evil; he preserves the lives of his
11
saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Light dawns for
12
the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart. Rejoice in the LORD, O
you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!

Gospel: Matthew 25: 1-13

1
"Then the kingdom of heaven shall be compared to ten maidens who
2
took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were
3
foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they
4 5
took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As
6
the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. But at
midnight there was a cry, `Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet
7 8
him.' Then all those maidens rose and trimmed their lamps. And the
foolish said to the wise, `Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going
9
out.' But the wise replied, `Perhaps there will not be enough for us and
10
for you; go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.' And while they
went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in
11
with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut. Afterward the
12
other maidens came also, saying, `Lord, lord, open to us.' But he
13
replied, `Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' Watch therefore, for you
know neither the day nor the hour.

7
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who
8
loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does
9
not know God, for God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed
to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life
10
through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he
11
loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so
12
loved us, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God.
Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to
13
perfection in us. This is how we know that we remain in him and he in
14
us, that he has given us of his Spirit. Moreover, we have seen and
15
testify that the Father sent his Son as saviour of the world. Whoever
acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he
16
in God. We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for
us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in
him.

Gospel: Matthew 23:8-12

8
As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.' You have but one teacher, and you
9
are all brothers. Call no one on earth your father; you have but one
10
Father in heaven. Do not be called 'Master'; you have but one master,
11
the Messiah. The greatest among you must be your servant.
12
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself
will be exalted.

Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, martyr – Memorial

John the Baptist was the son of Zachary, a

priest of the Temple in Jerusalem, and
Elizabeth, a kinswoman of Mary who visited
her. He was probably born at Ain-Karim
southwest of Jerusalem after the Angel Gabriel
had told Zachary that his wife would bear a
child even though she was an old woman. He
lived as a hermit in the desert of Judea until
about A.D. 27. When he was thirty, he began
to preach on the banks of the Jordan against
the evils of the times and called men to
penance and baptism "for the Kingdom of
Heaven is close at hand". He attracted large
crowds, and when Christ came to him, John
recognized Him as the Messiah and baptized
Him, saying, "It is I who need baptism from
You". When Christ left to preach in Galilee, John continued preaching in
the Jordan valley. Fearful of his great power with the people, Herod
Antipas, Tetrarch of Perea and Galilee, had him arrested and imprisoned
at Machaerus Fortress on the Dead Sea when John denounced his
adultrous and incestuous marriage with Herodias, wife of his half brother
Philip. John was beheaded at the request of Salome, daughter of
Herodias, who asked for his head at the instigation of her mother. John
inspired many of his followers to follow Christ when he designated Him
"the Lamb of God," among them Andrew and John, who came to know
Christ through John's preaching. John is presented in the New Testament
as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the precursor of the
Messiah. His feast day is June 24th and the feast for his beheading is
August 29th.

First Reading:Jeremiah 1:17-19

17
But you, gird up your loins; arise, and say to them everything that I
command you. Do not be dismayed by them, lest I dismay you before
18
them. And I, behold, I make you this day a fortified city, an iron pillar,
and bronze walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, its
19
princes, its priests, and the people of the land. They will fight against
you; but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you, says the
LORD, to deliver you."

Responsorial Psalm:Psalm 71:1-6, 15, 17

1 2
In thee, O LORD, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame! In thy
righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline thy ear to me, and save
3
me! Be thou to me a rock of refuge, a strong fortress, to save me, for
4
thou art my rock and my fortress. Rescue me, O my God, from the hand
5
of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man. For thou, O
6
Lord, art my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth. Upon thee I have
leaned from my birth; thou art he who took me from my mother's womb.
My praise is continually of thee.
15
My mouth will tell of thy righteous acts, of thy deeds of salvation all the
day, for their number is past my knowledge.
17
O God, from my youth thou hast taught me, and I still proclaim thy
wondrous deeds.

Gospel:Mark 6:17-29

17
For Herod had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for the
sake of Hero'di-as, his brother Philip's wife; because he had married her.
18
For John said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's
19
wife." And Hero'di-as had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him.
20
But she could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a
righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he was
25
21
much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly. But an opportunity came
when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers
22
and the leading men of Galilee. For when Hero'di-as' daughter came in
and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the
23
girl, "Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will grant it." And he vowed to
her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom."
24
And she went out, and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she
25
said, "The head of John the baptizer." And she came in immediately
with haste to the king, and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once
26
the head of John the Baptist on a platter." And the king was exceedingly
sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break
27
his word to her. And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard
and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the
28
prison, and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the
29
girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard of it, they came and
took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading:Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8

1
"And now, O Israel, give heed to the statutes and the ordinances which I
teach you, and do them; that you may live, and go in and take possession
2
of the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you. You
shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it; that you
may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command
6
you. Keep them and do them; for that will be your wisdom and your
understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these
statutes, will say, `Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding
7
people.' For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the
8
LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? And what great
nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this
law which I set before you this day?

Psalm:Psalm 15:2-5
2
He who walks blamelessly, and does what is right, and speaks truth from
3
his heart; who does not slander with his tongue, and does no evil to his
4
friend, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbour; in whose eyes a
reprobate is despised, but who honours those who fear the LORD; who
5
swears to his own hurt and does not change; who does not put out his
money at interest, and does not take a bribe against the innocent. He
who does these things shall never be moved.

Second Reading:James 1:17-18, 21-22, 27

17
Every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming
down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow
18
due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth
21
that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. Therefore put
away all filthiness and rank growth of wickedness and receive with
22
meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be
27
doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Religion
27

that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit
orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from
the world.

Gospel:Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

1
Now when the Pharisees gathered together to him, with some of the
2
scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his
3
disciples ate with hands defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees,
and all the Jews, do not eat unless they wash their hands, observing the
4
tradition of the elders; and when they come from the market place, they
do not eat unless they purify themselves; and there are many other
traditions which they observe, the washing of cups and pots and vessels
5
of bronze.) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your
disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with
6
hands defiled?" And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you
hypocrites, as it is written, `This people honors me with their lips, but their
7
heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines
8
the precepts of men.' You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast
14
the tradition of men." And he called the people to him again, and said to
15
them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a
man which by going into him can defile him; but the things which come
21
out of a man are what defile him." For from within, out of the heart of
22
man, come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, coveting,
23
wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All
these evil things come from within, and they defile a man."

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL

Saint Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

THE CHAPLET OF ST. MICHAEL

O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory be
to the Father, etc.

[Say one Our Father and three Hail Marys after each of the following
nine salutations in honor of the nine Choirs of Angels]

1. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of

Seraphim may the Lord make us worthy to burn with the fire of
perfect charity. Amen.

2. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of

Cherubim may the Lord grant us the grace to leave the ways of sin
and run in the paths of Christian perfection. Amen.

3. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of

Thrones may the Lord infuse into our hearts a true and sincere
spirit of humility. Amen.

4. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of

Dominions may the Lord give us grace to govern our senses and
overcome any unruly passions. Amen.

5. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of

Powers may the Lord protect our souls against the snares and
temptations of the devil. Amen.

6. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of

Virtues may the Lord preserve us from evil and falling into
temptation. Amen.

7. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of

Principalities may God fill our souls with a true spirit of
obedience. Amen.
30

8. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of

Archangels may the Lord give us perseverance in faith and in all
good works in order that we may attain the glory of Heaven. Amen.

9. By the intercession of St. Michael and the celestial Choir of

Angels may the Lord grant us to be protected by them in this mortal
life and conducted in the life to come to Heaven. Amen.

Say one Our Father in honor of each of the following leading Angels:
St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael and our Guardian Angel.

Concluding prayers:

O glorious prince St. Michael, chief and commander of the

heavenly hosts, guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits,
servant in the house of the Divine King and our admirable conductor,
you who shine with excellence and superhuman virtue deliver us from
all evil, who turn to you with confidence and enable us by your
gracious protection to serve God more and more faithfully every day.

Pray for us, O glorious St. Michael, Prince of the Church of Jesus
Christ, that we may be made worthy of His promises.

Almighty and Everlasting God, Who, by a prodigy of goodness and a

merciful desire for the salvation of all men, has appointed the most
glorious Archangel St. Michael Prince of Your Church, make us
worthy, we ask You, to be delivered from all our enemies, that none
of them may harass us at the hour of death, but that we may be
conducted by him into Your Presence. This we ask through the merits
of Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

ADORATION
Eucharistic Adoration
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is one of the best ways to spend
time with Jesus. There is so much noise around us these days. Spending
a quiet hour with Jesus in humble adoration will bring many graces and
blessings to you. Things that you have never even considered before will
now be made present to you. Bad things that would have happened to
you will now not happen. Here are some thoughts about what Jesus is
asking you during this time. As He told Peter, "Could you not spend one
hour with me?"

"MY CHILD, you need not know much in order to please Me; only love
Me dearly. Speak to Me as you would talk to your mother, if she had
taken you in her arms. Have you no one to recommend to Me? Tell Me
the names of your relations, of your friends; after each name add what
you wish Me to do for them. Ask a great deal: I love generous hearts
that forget themselves for others.

TELL ME about the poor whom you want to help, the sick whom you
have seen suffer, the sinner whom you would convert, the persons who
are alienated from you, and whose affections you wish to win back. For
all recite a fervent prayer. Remind Me that I have promised to grant
every prayer that comes from the heart; and surely the prayers are
heartfelt which we say for those whom we love, and who love us.

HAVE YOU no favors to ask for yourself'? Write, if you like, a long list of
all your wishes of all the needs of your soul--and come and read it to
Me. Tell Me simply how self-indulgent you are, how proud, how touchy,
how selfish, how cowardly, how idle; ask Me to help you to improve.
Poor child! Do not blush! There are in heaven many saints who had the
32

same faults as you; they prayed to Me, and, little by little, they were
cured.

DO NOT hesitate to ask for the goods of body and mind--for health, for
memory, for success. I can give everything, and I always give when the
gifts would make souls more holy. What do you want today, My child?
Oh, if you knew how I longed to do you good!

HAVE YOU no plans to interest you? Tell Me about them. Do they

concern your vocation? What do you think of? What would you like?
Are you planning some pleasure for your mother, for your family, for
your guardian? What do you wish to do for them?

AND HAVE you no thoughts of zeal for Me? Are you not anxious to do a
little good for the souls of your friends, for those whom you love, and
who, perhaps, forget Me? Tell Me who interests you, what motives urge
you, what means you wish to take.

CONFIDE TO Me your failures; I will show you the cause. Whom do you
wish to see interested in your work? I am the Master of all hearts, My
child, and I lead them gently where I please. I will place about you those
who are necessary to you; never fear!

HAVE YOU nothing to annoy you? My child, tell Me your annoyances,

with every detail. Who has pained you? Who as wounded your self-love?
Who has treated you contemptuously? Tell Me all, and then say that you
forgive and forget; and I will give you My blessing.
33

DO YOU dread something painful? Is there in your soul a vague fear

which seems unreasonable, and yet torments you? Trust fully in My
providence. I am here, I see everything; I will not leave you.

ARE THERE about you friends who seem less kind than formerly, who
neglect you through indifference or forgetfulness, without your having
consciously done anything to wound them? Pray for them, and I will
restore them to you, if there companionship is good for you.

HAVE YOU no joys to tell Me? Why not confide to Me your pleasures?
Tell Me what has happened since yesterday to console you, to make you
look happy, to give you joy. An unexpected visit has done you good; a
fear has been suddenly dispelled; you have met with unlooked for
success; you have received some mark of affection in a letter, a present;
some trial has left you stronger than you supposed. All these things, My
child, I obtained for you. Why are you not grateful? Why do you not say,
"I thank you?" Gratitude draws benefits, and the benefactor loves to be
reminded of His bounty.

HAVE YOU no promises to make Me? You know I read the very bottom
of your heart. Men are deceived, but not God; be frank.

ARE YOU resolved to avoid that occasion of sin, to give up the object
which leads you astray--not to read that book which excites your
imagination; to withdraw your friendship from that person who is
irreligious, and whose presence disturbs the peace of your soul? Will you
go at once and be kind to that companion who annoyed you?

WELL, MY child, go now and resume your daily work. Be silent, be

honest, be patient, be charitable, love very much the Blessed Mother of
34

Jesus; and tomorrow bring Me a heart even more devoted and loving.
Tomorrow I shall have new favors for you."

CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY

Instructions on how to pray the Chaplet:

"Thou didst expire, Lord Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for
souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount
of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty
Thyself out upon us."
(3 times) "O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of
Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in Thee!"
Our Father, Hail Mary, Apostle’s Creed…
On the large bead before each of the five decades (set of ten prayers):
"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Thy
Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and
those of the whole world."
Latin:"Pateraeterne, offerotibi Corpus et Sanguinem, animam et
divinitatemdilectissimiFiliiTui, Domininostri, Iesu Christi, in propitiatione
pro peccatisnostris et totiusmundi."
On each small "Hail Mary" bead:
"For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on
the whole world."
Latin:"Pro dolorosa Eiuspassione, misererenobis et totius mundi."
After five decades, conclude by saying three times:
"Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on
us and on the whole world."
'Latin:"Sanctus Deus, Sanctus Fortis, Sanctus Immortalis, miserere nobis
et totiusmundi."
(This prayer is based on the Trisagion of the Eastern tradition.)
Optional concluding prayers:
"Eternal God, in Whom mercy is endless and the treasury of
compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Thy
mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor
36

become despondent, but with great confidence submit

ourselves to Thy holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.
Amen."

3 O'Clock Prayer to the Divine Mercy

You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls
and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world.
O Fountain of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy,
envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.

O Blood and Water,

which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus
as a fountain of mercy for us,
I trust in You.

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One,

Have mercy on us and on the whole world. (3 times)

JESUS, King of mercy, I trust in You!

Amen
