On September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes and crashed two of the planes into the World Trade Center towers in New York City and another plane into the Pentagon building near Washington D.C. A fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks which sparked the US war on terror and invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq to fight Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. The attacks also led to increased government surveillance powers through laws like the Patriot Act and continued fears around further terrorist threats.
