SYNTHETIC FIBRES AND PLASTICS

WHAT ARE SYNTHETIC FIBRES

Synthetic fibers are the result of extensive research by scientists to improve on naturally occurring animal and plant fiber. In general, synthetic fibers are created by forcing, usually through extrusion, fiber forming materials through holes (called spinnerets) into the air, forming a thread. Before synthetic fibers were developed, artificially manufactured fibers were made from cellulose, which comes from plants. These fibers are called cellulose fibers.

TYPES OF SYNTHETIC FIBRES

1.Rayon 2.Nylon

RAYON is a manufactured regenerated cellolose fibre. Because it is produced from naturally occurring polymers, it is neither a truly synthetic fibres nor a natural fibres ; it is a semisynthetics 1. or artificial 2. fiber. Rayon is known by the names viscose rayon and art silk in the textile industry. It usually has a high luster quality giving it a bright sheen.

2.NYLON is a generic designation for a

family of synthetic polymers known as generically polymides . , first produce on february 28 , 1935 , by wallance carthores at dupont s research facility at dupont experimental station . Nylon is the polymers that are most commanly used .

PLASTICS
It is a polymer which can be moulded into various shapes, can be recycled, and reused. reused.

TYPES OF PLASTICS
TYPES OF PLASTICS 1.Thermoplastics 2.Thermosetting

THERMOPLASTIC
A thermoplastic also as thermo softening plastic, is a polymer that turns to a liquid when heated and freezes to a very glassy state when cooled sufficiently. Most thermoplastics are high-molecular-weight polymers whose chain associate through weak vander waals forces(polyethylene); stronger dipole-dipoleinteractions and hydrogen bonding(nylon) .

Thermosetting
A thermosetting plastic, also known as a thermoset, is polymer material that irreversibly cures . The cure may be done through heat (generally above 200 C (392 F)), through a chemical reaction (two-part epoxy, for example), or irradiation such as electron beam processing .
