CHEMICAL ENGINEERING 3553-1 Spring Semester, 2014 Homework Set #1 (due January 13) Fogler uses a number of multimedia

devices to supplement his textbook. Almost all of them on contained on the DVD that comes with his text. Updated versions of that information can be found on his website, www.umich.edu/~essen . You will be using some of the programs on the DVD for your homework. Please become familiar with the DVD. Unfortunately, most of them are PC programs and not MAC compatible. You may also run them from the Industrial Computer Center, the ICC (Room 2285 MEB) without using the DVD. Problem 1 (10 points) Prob. 1.10 in text, which is basically the Smog in Los Angeles Basin Web Module on the textbook website under Chapter 1 Learning Resources Web Modules C. Read through that module and the solution provided. The POLYMATH code can be found by clicking the Load Living Example Problem. As stated in the problem statement, write a paragraph, in your own words, describing what you find by varying the parameters, vo, a and b in the POLYMATH code.

Problem 2 (10 points) Prob. 1.11 in text

Problem 3 (at your leisure, no points) Run through the POLYMATH tutorial found in the Learning Resources for Chapter 1 on the DVD. The latest version of POLYMATH is installed on all the ICC computers and can be downloaded to your laptop. You should use this version instead of the one available on the DVD You also might want to run through these YouTube videos for inspiration.
