The idea to remove excess lumber by burning in the described manner is inadvisable for several
process safety reasons:
- There is a large possibility that the fire may become out of control. This hazard may be introduced by stray and nearby flammable material. In addition, this may be a viable hazard through the introduction of wind and other floating flammable material. - The method of lighting the pile on fire is dangerous. There are several possibilities of injury to the working lighting the pile on fire. First, there are tripping and other hazards that may hurt the worker, both on the way up the pile and on the way down the pile. Second, there is a major risk that should the worker not get off the pile in time of the flame being ignited, that the worker would be subject to severe injury or death. - Lastly, the inhalation of fumes from the gasoline while pouring said gasoline onto the pile may be a long term health concern to that employee. Based on the above concerns, and any more that may not yet be identified, I would advise against on the suggested method of removing excess and old timber that may be in the way of production.
