The longest road in the world

Close your book and imagine youre travelling down the west coast of North and South America. How many places can you think of?
My names Hank Weaver. Im a truck driver. I sometimes travel on the Pan-American Highway. Its the longest road in the world. Why dont you come with me? The highway goes from Alaska in the north to Chile in the south. It goes through 12 different countries and its 16,000 miles long. It goes past lakes and volcanoes, through snow and desert, hills and valleys, jungles and mountains. Californias Pacific coast is my favourite part of the route. Do you know the name of this famous bridge? Its in San Francisco one of the biggest cities on the highway. When Im in Arizona, I always stop for a meal at the Highway Diner. They make the best apple pie in the world. Have a look at this! Isnt it beautiful? Its a Blue Morpho butterfly and it lives in the rainforests of Central and South America. Between Panama and Colombia, there is no highway for 54 miles. This is called the Darien Gap. Some people want to build a road here. But a lot of people dont want the road because this is one of the richest and most important regions for wildlife in the world. Im going to take the ferry now, to the next section of the highway. I mean, you cant go and drive through someones garden, can you?
