MAE2312 Homework #10 Issued: 11/13/2013, five problems in total Due: 11/20/2013 11:00 am Problem 9-1: Read chapter

9 and answer the following questions 1. What are the non-zero stress components for a plane stress problem that lies in XOY plane

2. Draw the 3D general state of stress at a point and the 2D general state of plane stress at one point

3. What is the sign convention for the stress components of plane stress

4.

What are the stress components on a principle plane

5. Draw the Mohrs circle for a general state of plane stress; express R, 1, 2, avg and max in terms of the stress components and identify them on the Mohrs circle

Problem 9-2: For example 8.4 on p416, (a) draw the state of stress at points B, where B is in the same plane as point C; (b) use Mohrs circle to determine the state of stress at point B on an element that is oriented 30 o clockwise from the position shown.

Problem 9-3: For problem 8-4 on page 409, use Mohrs circle to determine the state of stress at A on an element that is oriented 60o counter-clock wise from the element of the principle stress.

Problem 9-4: For problem 8-29 on page 425, (a) determine the state of stress at point A and draw the stress components on a volume element; (b) use Mohrs circle to determine 1, 2, max, avg, (c) determine the orientation of the element that has the principle stresses1 and 2.

Problem 9-5: For problem 8-30 on page 425, (a) determine the state of stress at point A on the cross-section of the plank at section a-a and draw the stress components on a volume element; (b) use Mohrs circle to determine 1, 2, max, avg; (c) determine the orientation of the element that is subjected to the maximum shear stress max.
