The Gold Rush Week 3Day 6: California Population Boom!

(90 minutes) Objective Students will be able to identify and describe how the rise of population in California during the Gold Rush affected the area. Standards CCSSSL: Paraphrase portions of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. CCSSRL: Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a characters thoughts, words, or actions). CSSCS 4.4 Students explain how CA became an economic and industrial power tracing the transformation of the CA economy as well as the political and social development since the 1850s. 2. Explain how the Gold Rush transformed the economy of CA including the types of products produced and consumed, changes in towns (Sacramento, San Francisco).

Materials Class Set of Computers Teacher iPad to do the KWL chart on the Kidspiration App Teacher computer set to movie in United Streaming Boom or Bust Worksheet (attached) Paper/pencil

Guided Instruction To open this lesson, it would be a good opportunity to take out the collaborative KWL chart that was started in week one of the unit. This is a collaborative, ongoing graphic organizer using the Kidspiration app. The class can add as a group new knowledge they have learned about the Gold Rush. Then, you can begin the video The students will be instructed to take notes on the key points about the Gold Rush in the video. They should specifically pay attention to how the Gold Rush affected the population in California. After the video, the teacher will display the writing prompt with the Elmo document camera on the front board: How did the Gold Rush affect the population in California? Independent Activity This students writing should reflect their knowledge how the Gold Rush specifically affected the population if California. Main idea and details as well as beginning, middle and end writing strategies should be used. Students who are waiting for the computers to do the assignment should work on the Boom or Bust worksheet and start ideas for the writing assignment. The teacher will then instruct the students to complete the final copy of the writing on the computer using Word. Homework Homework this evening will be to complete the writing that they began during class today. The final copy should be emailed to the teacher.
