STEP 7 : Install the Cache Module

On many late-486's and early Pentiums e!ternal cache or "e#el $ cache %as installed in a slot& This %as later a'andoned in (a#or o( on-'oard cache or on-chi) cache %hich is mostly used today& I( you are installin* a ne%er 'oard %ith on-'oard cache you can s+i) this ste)& "i+e%ise i( you,re usin* a Pentium II or ne%er )rocessor or almost any manu(acturer the "$ cache is 'uilt into the chi) so the mother'oards (or these chi)s ha#e no cache at all and this ste) can a*ain 'e i*nored& The cache module is usually called the CO-St module& It is not uni#ersal& "i+e .-M there are di((erent ty)es and you need to ma+e sure you are installin* the ri*ht ty)e& /ollo% this sim)le )rocedure to install your CO-St module i( you ha#e one: 0& Line It Up& This is )retty easy& CO-St modules are +eyed to )re#ent incorrect installation& This is done 'y )lacin* an indent on some )oint other than the hal(%ay )oint there'y lea#in* a di((erent amount o( contacts on one side o( the indent than another& Insert The Module& -*ain easy& Once lined u) )ush the module into the slot& This may re1uire a 'it o( )ressure 'ut don't (orce it& Ma+e sure the mother'oard is on a (lat sur(ace so that you don't (le! the 'oard& "i+e a card it may 'e easier to roc+ the module installin* one side then the other& Check Your Work& 3ou're )retty much done& 4ust ma+e sure that the contacts are almost all the %ay into the slot and that o'#iously the module stic+s strai*ht o(( the mother'oard&56
