Jitender Singh

Introduction Yogacharya B. K. S. Iyengar was chosen for the Padma Vibhushan, the nations second highest civilian honour, on the eve of the 65th Republic Day (January 26, 2014). It is a great news to the millions of practitioners who have passed through Iyengar yoga schools in 72 countries, or have deepened their understanding of yoga poses through one of his books (most notably the 1966 classic Light on Yoga). The information given below is largely taken from www.bksiyengar.com. His Childhood BKS Iyengar was born on December 14, 1918. His father was a school teacher. At the age of 16, he was introduced to yoga by his Guru Sri T. Krishnamacharya. At the age of 18, he was sent to Pune by his guru to teach and preach yoga as he knew little English. He was a sincere and committed practitioner. His own practice helped him to explore and achieve perfection in yoga asanas. His Disciples BKS Iyengar taught several eminent personalities such as J. Krishnamurti, Aldous Huxley, Menuhin, Jayaprakash Narayan, Achut Patwardhan, Sachin Tendulkar, Murali Manohar Joshi. . . His Teachings His teachings were rst published in 1966 as Light on Yoga. Today, he is the author of 14 books. He was the rst person to teach large group of students. He lays great emphasis on precision and alignment which is followed by his students. He brings about an automatic transformation in the mind and habits of people. His Practice Even today, at the age of 95, he continues to practice. While in practice, he is an artist at work. Precision and beauty mark the asana, and the regular practice he advocates integrate the body, mind and emotions.

Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open. BKS Penetration of our mind is our goal, but in the beginning to set things in motion, there is no substitute for sweat. BKS
