Personal Theory of Learning

Having not yet experienced the modern classroom environment, there are many aspects of teaching with which I am unfamiliar. However, my classes have helped me form ideas that are often contrary to my traditional perceptions of student-teacher interaction. There is much more to teaching than the talk-and-chalk world to which I am accustomed. I think one of the most critical techniques for the modern teacher is assessment of student learning styles and how to maximize teaching efficiency in accordance with proven best practices.

I am beginning to realize how different my military experience is from real teaching experience. As I learn more about the direct instruction method, I see that my form of instruction was simply lecture followed by practical application. Very little attention was paid to ensuring all of my students had mastered the material at hand. I have been in the role of lecturer for nearly a decade; it is vital that I must break the habit and become proficient in the wide range of teaching styles employed in today's classroom. Varying my teaching styles allows every student the opportunity to master material in ways that strengthen their individual learning styles.

Another factor in effective teaching is the use of technology in the classroom. This is another leap from the environment I experienced as a child, where now the Smartboard has replaced the chalkboard, and the tablet is well on the way to replacing the textbook. The current generation of students have modern technology integrated throughout their daily lives, so schools must use technology as a tool to interact with and engage the 21st century student.

I have become aware of the social and political issues with teaching. It seems that in this politically charged environment, teacher accountability and performance is on the top of the list. As standardized testing preparation consumes a large portion of class time, it is becoming a major feat for teachers to incorporate multiple teaching styles necessary while simultaneously meeting the strict schedules required in covering all necessary modules. School systems continue to evolve to meet the educational needs which must be afforded to all children. It is encouraging to see so much time and devotion on this matter, but it also makes me aware of the amount of preparation and learning necessary to positively contribute to this system.
