Lesson #4: Collecting Like Terms

Definitions Term The product of numbers and/or variables. Like Terms Terms that have identical variables with the same exponents. Key Concepts Like terms have identical variables. You can simplify a polynomial by adding or subtracting like terms. This is called collecting like terms. It is helpful to think of only adding terms. When a subtraction sign appears, think of adding a negative term. Example 1: Identify Like and Unlike Terms Identify the like terms in each group. a) 2 x, 2,5x,3xy,3x b) 4a 2 , 2a, a 2 , a3 , a 2b
1 c) 3u 2 , 4uv, 6, 2u 2 , v, 5 2

Example 2: Collect Like Terms Simplify. a) 6x 4 8x 3 b) 2b b 7 8 c) 3r 2 2 6r 9r 3r 2 d) 0.5m 4.5n 0.7m 4.5n 1.5
